When it comes to craft projects, there’s nothing more frustrating than being in the middle of a wonderful creative flow, only to discover that you’re missing an essential item. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to halt my progress in the past, rushing out to the craft store to pick up some much-needed item.
That’s why I’ve made a habit of keeping certain supplies on hand at all times. In this article, I’m going to share the top ten things I always keep in my craft drawer, so you, too, can avoid those annoying, creativity-stifling interruptions!
1. A Good Pair of Scissors
Every craft project starts with a good pair of scissors. And I’m not talking about the ones you use in the kitchen or for cutting paper. A dedicated pair of fabric scissors will make your crafting life so much easier. They’re designed to cut through fabric smoothly and easily, without fraying the edges.
Of course, you don’t have to limit yourself to just one pair. I keep a few different types on hand: large ones for cutting out patterns, small ones for detail work, and pinking shears to give a decorative edge to my projects. Remember, using your fabric scissors on paper will dull them, so it’s a good idea to have a separate pair for paper-based projects.
2. A Variety of Glues
Glue is the backbone of any craft project. But not all glues are created equal. White craft glue is great for paper and light materials, but it won’t hold up when it comes to heavier items or materials like fabric or plastic. That’s why I always keep a variety of glues in my craft drawer.
A good fabric glue for any sewing projects, a strong superglue for anything that needs a sturdy hold, and a hot glue gun for when I need a quick and strong bond. It’s also worth keeping some double-sided tape and glue dots for those projects that require a less messy option.
3. A Collection of Paints
Whether you’re touching up a piece of furniture or adding some color to a homemade greeting card, paint is a must-have. I always keep a small selection of acrylic paints in my drawer. They’re versatile, easy to use, and come in a fantastic range of colors.
In addition to acrylics, I keep watercolors for more delicate projects, and a few cans of spray paint for larger items. Remember to always use spray paint in a well-ventilated area and protect your surroundings from any overspray.
4. Washi Tape
Washi tape is a decorative Japanese tape that comes in a variety of colors and patterns. It’s excellent for adding a touch of flair to any project, and it’s easy to use – just cut, peel, and stick. I keep a selection of different colors and patterns in my drawer.
They’re great for decorating handmade cards, scrapbooking, or even jazzing up a plain notebook or calendar. The best thing about washi tape is that it’s easy to remove and doesn’t leave a sticky residue, so you can change your designs as often as you like.
5. A Range of Buttons
Buttons are another versatile crafting essential. They’re perfect for adding a finishing touch to a sewing project, or for creating unique and personalized pieces of jewelry.
I like to keep a selection of different shapes, sizes, and colors in my craft drawer. You can pick up mixed bags of buttons at most craft stores, or you can recycle old buttons from worn-out clothes. With buttons, the only limit is your imagination!
6. Ribbons and Lace
Ribbons and lace add a certain charm to any craft project. Whether it’s tying a bow on a handmade gift, adding a lace trim to a sewing project, or creating a beautiful ribbon garland, these materials are essential.
I recommend keeping a range of colors, widths, and patterns in your drawer. You never know when you might need to add a little something extra to a project, and having a variety on hand ensures you’re always prepared.
7. Craft Wire
Craft wire is another essential that I always keep in my drawer. It’s incredibly versatile and can be used in a wide range of projects – from jewelry making to floral arrangements, and even sculpture.
I recommend keeping a few different gauges on hand. Thinner wire is great for delicate projects like beading, while thicker wire is perfect for projects that require a bit more structure. Remember, the higher the gauge number, the thinner the wire.
8. Beads
Beads are a must for any jewelry-making project, but they can also be used in a variety of other crafts. They add a touch of glamour and sparkle to any piece, and come in a wide range of colors, shapes, and sizes.
I like to keep a good selection of beads in my craft drawer, from tiny seed beads to larger, statement ones. Remember, it’s always better to have too many than not enough – you never know when you’ll need that perfect bead!
9. A Collection of Threads
Whether you’re sewing, quilting, or embroidering, a good selection of thread is essential. I keep a variety of colors and types in my drawer, including cotton, silk, and polyester threads.
Thread can also be used for other crafts, like macramé or friendship bracelets. I recommend keeping a few different thicknesses on hand for different projects – thicker threads are great for sturdy seams, while thinner ones are perfect for delicate work.
10. A Good Quality Cutting Mat
Finally, a good cutting mat is a must-have. It not only protects your work surface from cuts and scratches, but it also helps to achieve precise, clean cuts. I recommend investing in a self-healing cutting mat.
These are designed to automatically close up after being cut, so they last a long time. They often come with grid lines and measurement guides, which can be incredibly helpful for ensuring accurate cuts.
