We all want a clean and tidy space to live, work, and play in, but it’s not always as easy as it seems. Cleaning can be a daunting task and sometimes, despite our best efforts, it can seem like we’re not making any progress.

I’ve made plenty of cleaning mistakes throughout my journey towards a tidier space. Here are some of the mistakes I’ve given up, and the steps I’ve taken to correct them.

1. Overusing Cleaning Products

I used to believe that the more cleaning products I used, the cleaner my home would be. However, this not only led to wasted product but also left a harsh chemical smell in my home.

I’ve learned that using the right amount is enough to get the job done. Reading the instructions on the product label has helped me understand the appropriate quantity to use.

2. Neglecting the Clutter

I’d often spend hours cleaning my home, only to find it just as cluttered as before. I realized that cleaning is not just about wiping down surfaces but also about getting rid of unnecessary items. By decluttering regularly, I’ve been able to maintain a tidier space.

3. Ignoring High Traffic Areas

I used to focus on cleaning the more noticeable areas of my home, neglecting high traffic areas like the entrance, hallway, and kitchen. By paying more attention to these areas, I’ve found that my home stays cleaner for longer.

4. Using One Cloth for All

Using a single cloth for cleaning the entire house was a big mistake. Cross-contamination can spread germs and dirt around the house. Now, I use different cloths for the kitchen, bathroom, and other areas.

5. Not Cleaning Cleaning Tools

I never thought of cleaning my cleaning tools. This oversight led to less effective cleaning and a shorter lifespan for my tools. By regularly cleaning and maintaining my tools, they stay effective and last longer.

6. Leaving Dishes in the Sink Overnight

Leaving dishes in the sink overnight seemed convenient, but it only made the task harder the next day. Now, I make it a point to clean dishes right after use, which keeps my kitchen cleaner and reduces stress.

7. Not Establishing a Cleaning Schedule

Cleaning whenever I felt like it resulted in irregular cleaning patterns and a much messier home. Establishing a regular cleaning schedule has helped me keep on top of things and maintain a tidier space.

8. Not Cleaning Top to Bottom

I was not aware of the top-to-bottom rule for cleaning. Cleaning from the bottom up only resulted in dust and dirt falling on the already cleaned areas. Now, I always start from the top and work my way down.

9. Overloading the Dishwasher

I used to stuff my dishwasher to the brim, thinking it would save time. However, this often resulted in dishes not being cleaned properly. Now, I load the dishwasher correctly to ensure all dishes are thoroughly cleaned.

10. Forgetting to Clean the Vacuum

The vacuum cleaner needs cleaning too! I used to overlook this, causing my vacuum to lose suction power over time. Regularly cleaning and replacing the vacuum filters has made a significant difference.

11. Procrastinating on Tasks

Procrastination was my biggest enemy. I would often delay cleaning tasks until they became overwhelming. Tackling tasks as they come up, no matter how small, has made my cleaning routine much more manageable.
