We’ve all been there — that moment of panic when you realize something that shouldn’t be in the washing machine is tumbling around, soaking wet. Maybe it’s a delicate piece of clothing, a cash-filled wallet, or even a handheld electronic device. It’s a heart-dropping, stomach-churning moment that sends you scrambling to halt the wash cycle.

To save you from such future heartaches, and to extend the life of your washing machine, I’m sharing a list of 11 items I wish I’d never put in the washing machine.

1. Leather Items

Leather should never be washed in the machine. The washing machine’s aggressive spin cycle can cause the leather to warp, crack, or become too stiff.

For instance, if you have a leather jacket that’s gotten dirty, instead of tossing it in the machine, it’s better to spot clean it using a damp cloth or take it to a professional cleaner. The same goes for other leather items like shoes, belts, and bags. And remember, leather does not react well to water in general, so try to keep your leather goods dry whenever possible.

2. Coins

We’ve all accidentally left a few coins in our pockets before throwing our clothes in the wash. But did you know that coins can actually damage your washing machine?

Coins can get lodged in the drain pump, causing it to malfunction or fail altogether. Not only can this lead to costly repairs, but it can also create a potential flooding hazard. So, always make sure to check your pockets before doing laundry.

3. Keys

Just like coins, keys are another common item that can accidentally end up in the washing machine. Not only can they damage your washing machine, but they can also get ruined in the process.

Keys can get scratched, warped, or even break apart in the washing machine. If you rely on these keys to get into your house or start your car, it can be highly inconvenient when they get damaged. So, always double-check your pockets before throwing your clothes in the wash.

4. Underwire Bras

Underwire bras might seem sturdy, but they’re not made to withstand the washing machine. The constant tumbling can cause the underwire to break free, potentially damaging your machine and other clothes in the wash.

Instead, wash your underwire bras by hand using gentle soap. If you really need to wash them in the machine, use a mesh laundry bag to protect both the bra and your machine.

5. Running Shoes

While it might be tempting to toss your dirty running shoes in the wash, this is a bad idea for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the aggressive spin cycle can damage your shoes, altering their shape and reducing their lifespan.

Secondly, the weight of the shoes tumbling around can damage your washing machine. Instead, clean your running shoes by hand using a brush and soapy water.

6. Wallets

The washing machine is not the place for your wallet. Aside from the fact that it could ruin the material, you also run the risk of damaging any credit cards or identification cards inside.

If your wallet gets dirty, wipe it down with a damp cloth. And always check your pockets before doing laundry to avoid washing your wallet.

7. Pet Hair

If your pet sheds a lot, you might be tempted to throw their bedding or your clothes in the wash. However, pet hair can clog your washing machine’s drain and even ruin your clothes.

Instead of washing items covered in pet hair, use a lint roller or vacuum to remove the hair first. Then, you can safely wash the items without worrying about pet hair in your machine.

8. Jewelry

Jewelry is far too delicate to be thrown in the wash. The violent shaking and tumbling could easily damage or even destroy your precious items.

To clean jewelry, use a soft cloth and jewelry cleaner. And always remember to remove your jewelry before doing laundry.

9. Electronic Devices

It goes without saying, but electronic devices and water don’t mix. Washing your phone, tablet, or other device can lead to permanent damage.

If you accidentally leave your device in your pocket, stop the wash immediately and remove it. And always double-check your pockets before doing laundry.

10. Anything with Large or Sharp Metal Parts

Items with large or sharp metal parts can scratch the inside of your washing machine or even cause more serious damage.

Instead of washing these items, consider spot cleaning them or taking them to a professional cleaner.

11. Delicate Fabrics

Delicate fabrics like silk, lace, and cashmere can be ruined in the wash. The aggressive spin cycle can cause these fabrics to shrink, warp, or even tear.

Instead, hand wash these items or take them to a professional cleaner. And always check the care label on your clothes before washing them.
