12 Things I Always Buy Secondhand

In today’s world, we often rush to buy the latest, most modern items, forgetting that some of the best gems can be found secondhand. Buying secondhand not only saves us money but also helps us contribute to a more sustainable world by reducing waste and the demand for new products. Plus, there’s something undeniably thrilling about finding a unique piece with its own story at a fraction of the retail price. Here are 12 items that I always buy secondhand, and why you should consider doing the same.

1. Books

There’s something special about a pre-loved book. The pages have been turned, the story has been loved, and you’re continuing its journey. I find secondhand books in thrift shops, online marketplaces, and local charity shops. Not only are they cheaper, but they often have a character that new books don’t have.

Moreover, buying secondhand books supports small businesses and charities, rather than large corporations. And if you’re a bookworm like me, you’ll appreciate the lower prices which mean you can buy more books for your money. Plus, you’ll be reducing your carbon footprint by reusing rather than buying new.

2. Vintage Clothing

Vintage clothing is a must-buy secondhand. These items were made to last, unlike much of the fast fashion we see today. They’re unique, high-quality, and often come at a fraction of the price of equivalent new items.

Shopping for vintage clothing secondhand allows you to develop your unique style without breaking the bank. It’s also a more sustainable choice, as you’re recycling a product that already exists rather than supporting the production of new clothing. Plus, vintage shopping can be a fun treasure hunt.

3. Furniture

When it comes to furniture, I always look secondhand first. Often, you can find high-quality pieces made from solid wood that will last longer than most new, flat-pack furniture. Plus, older pieces often have a distinctive style that can add character to your home.

Buying secondhand furniture also reduces the demand for new items, which helps reduce deforestation. And don’t worry if the piece isn’t perfect – a little bit of DIY can transform a shabby piece into a chic feature for your home.

4. Kitchenware

From pots and pans to vintage china, secondhand kitchenware can be a real find. Older items are often better made and longer lasting than their modern counterparts. Plus, they come with the added benefit of being cheaper.

Just like with furniture, buying secondhand kitchenware reduces the demand for new products. It’s a small way to make your lifestyle more sustainable. And who knows, you might find a unique piece that becomes the talking point of your dinner parties.

5. Jewellery

Jewellery is another item that I always buy secondhand. Not only can you find unique pieces that no one else will have, but you can also find high-quality items at a fraction of their retail price.

Moreover, buying secondhand jewellery is a more ethical choice. The jewellery industry is fraught with ethical issues, from conflict diamonds to unfair labour practices. Buying secondhand allows you to enjoy beautiful jewellery without supporting these issues.

6. Cars

Cars depreciate in value the minute they’re driven off the lot, so buying a used car can save you a significant amount of money. Plus, used cars often come with their own warranties and service packages, giving you peace of mind.

Moreover, manufacturing new cars is resource-intensive and polluting. By choosing to buy secondhand, you’re reducing the demand for new cars, which can help reduce the industry’s environmental impact.

7. Musical Instruments

Musical instruments can be incredibly expensive when purchased new, but buying secondhand can make them more affordable. Plus, older instruments often have a richer sound that only comes with age.

Buying secondhand also gives you the opportunity to try out an instrument without committing to the cost of a new one. It’s a great way to explore your musical interests without breaking the bank.

8. Tech Devices

From smartphones to laptops, buying tech devices secondhand can save you a significant amount of money. Plus, used devices often come with warranties and have been refurbished to ensure they’re in good working condition.

Moreover, the tech industry is one of the biggest contributors to e-waste. By buying secondhand, you’re extending the life of these devices and reducing the demand for new ones, which can help reduce the industry’s environmental impact.

9. Artwork

Artwork can be incredibly expensive when bought new, but secondhand shops, auctions, and online marketplaces often have beautiful pieces at a fraction of the price. Plus, older artwork often has a unique style and character that you won’t find in modern pieces.

Buying secondhand artwork also gives you the opportunity to support local artists and small businesses. It’s a great way to decorate your home while also supporting your local community.

10. Sports Equipment

Sports equipment is another item that can be very expensive when purchased new. However, many people sell their equipment when they upgrade or switch sports, so you can often find high-quality, barely-used items secondhand.

Moreover, buying secondhand sports equipment allows you to try out a new sport without committing to the cost of new equipment. It’s a great way to stay active and try new things without spending a fortune.

11. Tools

Tools, especially high-quality ones, can be very expensive when bought new. But many people sell their tools when they upgrade or no longer need them, so you can often find great deals on secondhand tools.

Moreover, tools are designed to last, so buying secondhand doesn’t usually mean compromising on quality. It’s a great way to build your tool collection without breaking the bank.

12. Children’s Items

From toys to clothes, children’s items can be incredibly expensive – especially considering how quickly children grow out of them. Buying these items secondhand can save you a significant amount of money.

Moreover, children’s items are often barely used before they’re outgrown. Buying secondhand allows you to get practically new items at a fraction of the price. Plus, it’s a more sustainable choice, as you’re extending the life of these items and reducing the demand for new ones.
