A Connecticut family woke up to the kind of nightmare no parent could ever be ready for.
Twelve-year-old Eve Rogers was found unresponsive in her bed on the morning of March 18, and by the time first responders arrived, she was gone. What makes the loss even harder is that her family still does not know why.
Right now, police say the cause of death was not immediately apparent, and investigators are waiting for more guidance from the medical examiner.
Her Family Called 911 After Finding Her Unresponsive
According to Enfield police, officers, EMS, and firefighters were sent to the home around 10:25 a.m. after a 911 call about an unresponsive girl.
When they got there, they confirmed the death of a 12-year-old child living in the home.
That alone would be devastating enough. But because there was no obvious cause of death, the situation quickly turned into a full investigation. Police brought in the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad to assist, and a search warrant was obtained for the home.
At this point, authorities say they do not know whether any criminal activity took place.
The Hardest Part Right Now May Be the Waiting
Police Chief Alaric Fox has said investigators are speaking with anyone who may have relevant information, including family members, as part of the normal process in a case like this.
But the bigger reality is that answers may not come quickly.
Authorities have made clear that it could take weeks before the cause and manner of death are officially confirmed. That means Eve’s family is not only grieving the loss of their daughter, but also living inside the uncertainty of not knowing what happened to her.
And that kind of waiting can make an already unbearable loss feel even heavier.
The Investigation Goes Beyond Police
Law enforcement is not the only agency involved. The Connecticut Department of Children and Families also confirmed it is conducting a joint investigation with police, though officials said they could not share additional details because of confidentiality laws.
Reports also noted that Eve had been homeschooled after being withdrawn from school in 2022.
Even so, the loss has clearly rippled through the wider community. Enfield Public Schools released a statement expressing sadness over Eve’s death and said counseling services would be made available for students.
The People Who Knew Her Are Grieving a Girl They Say Lit Up the Room
A GoFundMe created by a family friend describes Eve as someone full of passion, justice, and light.
That description says a lot about what her family and loved ones are really mourning right now. Not just a 12-year-old girl, but the energy she brought into the world and the future they thought they still had with her.
For now, police are still working to understand what happened.
But for the people who loved Eve, the tragedy is already painfully clear: a mother went to wake her daughter, and instead, an entire family’s life changed in a single morning.
