In this ever-evolving world of technology and digital nomadism, home offices have become an essential part of our lives. They provide a comfortable, personal space where we can focus on our work without the distractions or pressures of a traditional office setting.

However, creating a productive and inviting home office requires a little more than just a desk and a laptop. A well-stocked home office can make your work day more efficient, comfortable, and even enjoyable. Let’s dive into the 13 things I always buy for my home office.

1. Ergonomic Chair

An ergonomic chair is the first thing I invest in for my home office. Hours of sitting can take a toll on your back and posture, leading to discomfort and long-term health issues. An ergonomic chair offers adjustable features to support your body’s natural alignment, promoting better posture and reducing the risk of back pain.

I recommend looking for a chair with adjustable seat height, backrest, and armrests. A chair with good lumbar support is also crucial. Remember, not all ergonomic chairs are created equal. Take the time to research, read reviews, and even test out a few chairs in a store if possible. Your back will thank you.

2. Dual Monitors

Having dual monitors in my home office has been a game-changer. It allows me to have multiple windows open at once, which increases productivity and efficiency. I can have my email on one screen and a work project on the other, negating the need to constantly switch back and forth. When choosing monitors, consider the size, resolution, and adjustability.

Two 24-inch monitors are a good size for most desks. For resolution, a 1080p full HD monitor will give you a clear, sharp image. Also, ensure the monitors have an adjustable stand so you can position them at eye level, reducing neck strain.

3. Quality Headphones

Whether it’s for video conferences, listening to music or blocking out external noises, a quality pair of headphones is a must-have for any home office. They should be comfortable for long periods of use, and offer excellent sound quality.

Noise-canceling headphones are a great choice if you’re working in a noisy environment. They help to block out background noise, allowing you to focus on your work. Look for headphones with a built-in microphone for clear, hands-free calls.

4. Desk Organizer

A cluttered desk can lead to a cluttered mind. A desk organizer helps to keep your workspace tidy and your supplies within reach. It’s a simple, affordable item that can make a big difference in your productivity.

There are many types of desk organizers available, from simple pen holders to elaborate systems with drawers and shelves. Choose one that fits your needs and the size of your desk. A place for everything, and everything in its place.

5. Adjustable Desk

An adjustable desk, also known as a sit-stand desk, allows you to alternate between sitting and standing while you work. This can help to alleviate the strain on your back and neck caused by prolonged sitting.

There are electric and manual adjustable desks. Electric desks change height at the push of a button, while manual desks require a bit of physical effort. Despite the higher cost, I find the convenience of an electric adjustable desk worth the investment.

6. LED Desk Lamp

Good lighting is crucial in a home office. It can reduce eye strain and improve mood. An LED desk lamp is energy-efficient, lasts longer than traditional bulbs, and can provide bright, adjustable light.

Look for a lamp with adjustable brightness and color temperature. This allows you to tailor the light to your needs and the time of day. A lamp with a built-in USB port can also be handy for charging your phone or other devices.

7. Keyboard and Mouse

A quality keyboard and mouse can improve your typing speed and reduce strain on your hands and wrists. I prefer wireless models for a cleaner, clutter-free desk.

For the keyboard, consider the key layout, key travel, and whether it has a built-in wrist rest. For the mouse, look at the size, shape, and number of buttons. It should fit comfortably in your hand and have buttons for all your needs.

8. Printer

While we live in a digital world, there are still times when a physical copy is necessary. Having a printer in your home office saves you the trip to the print shop. Consider a multi-function printer that can also scan and copy.

Also, check the cost of replacement ink cartridges as this can add up over time. A printer with Wi-Fi capability can print directly from your devices without the need for cables.

9. Whiteboard or Corkboard

A whiteboard or corkboard is a great tool for visualizing your tasks, goals, or ideas. It’s also a handy place to jot down reminders or notes. Choose a size that fits your wall space and your needs.

You can also look for boards with a built-in calendar or grid lines for better organization. Don’t forget to buy markers or pins!

10. Comfortable Rug

A comfortable rug adds warmth and comfort to your home office. It’s especially nice if you have hard flooring. Look for a rug that’s easy to clean and durable. A rug with a non-slip backing is a good idea if you’ll be standing or moving around a lot. Consider the color and pattern of the rug as well. It should complement your office decor and create a cozy, inviting atmosphere.

11. Plants

Plants can improve air quality and create a calming, pleasant environment. Plus, they add a touch of nature to your workspace. Choose plants that are easy to care for and suitable for your office conditions. Succulents, snake plants, and pothos are good choices for low-light offices. Remember to water them as needed and give them plenty of love!

12. Cable Management System

A cable management system can tidy up your desk and prevent cables from tangling. This not only looks neater, but it can also prolong the life of your cables. There are many cable management solutions, from simple cable clips to under-desk trays. Choose one that suits your desk and the number of cables you have. It’s a small detail that can make a big difference.

13. Personal Decor

Lastly, personal decor can make your home office a more enjoyable place to spend your day. This could be anything from photos of loved ones, to artwork, to a favorite mug for your coffee. Choose decor that makes you happy and inspires you. After all, this is your space. You should feel comfortable and motivated in it. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter in video calls!
