15 Items I Always Keep in My Desk Drawer

We’ve all had those moments at work where we find ourselves in need of something essential, like a stapler or a pen, only to discover that there’s none in sight. Keeping a well-stocked desk drawer is a simple way to stay prepared for any situation that might arise during your workday.

It’s also an excellent way to keep yourself organized and productive. In this post, I’ll share 15 items that I always keep in my desk drawer. These aren’t just essential tools for my work, but little things that make my day better in surprising ways.

1. Pens and Pencils

It’s a no-brainer, but having a stock of pens and pencils at your desk is essential. Whether you’re jotting down quick notes, brainstorming ideas, or signing documents, having a pen or pencil handy is a must. I like to keep a variety of pens with different ink colors and thicknesses, as well as a mechanical pencil for sketching or drafting.

Not just any pens will do, though. Investing in higher quality pens can make a big difference in your writing experience. For example, some pens are designed to reduce hand fatigue and are perfect for those days when you’re writing non-stop. Additionally, pencils with softer lead can make your sketches and drafts look more professional.

2. Post-it Notes

Post-it notes aren’t just for leaving reminders or messages. They’re also excellent for organizing your work and breaking down tasks into manageable chunks. I often use them to jot down quick ideas or to-do lists, and then stick them on my monitor or notebook for easy reference. In addition to traditional yellow Post-it notes, there are also a variety of other colors and sizes available.

Using different colors can help you categorize your tasks or ideas. For example, you might use green for personal tasks, yellow for work-related tasks, and pink for ideas or inspiration. Different sizes can also be useful for different purposes. Larger Post-it notes can be used for more detailed notes or sketches, while smaller ones are perfect for brief reminders.

3. Stapler and Staples

A stapler is another office essential that’s easy to overlook until you need it. Whether you’re putting together a report, organizing paperwork, or just keeping your documents in order, a stapler is invaluable. I always make sure to keep a full box of staples in my drawer as well, so I’m never caught without them.

While most people are familiar with standard staplers, there are also a variety of specialized staplers on the market. For example, some staplers are designed to staple large stacks of paper, while others are designed for specific tasks such as bookbinding or crafting. Regardless of which type of stapler you choose, be sure to also keep a staple remover handy!

4. Notebook

I’ve always found that writing things down helps me remember them better. That’s why I always keep a notebook in my desk drawer. Whether I’m taking notes during a meeting, jotting down ideas for a project, or simply doodling during a break, having a notebook handy is essential.

There are many different types of notebooks available, from simple spiral-bound notebooks to high-quality leather-bound journals. Your choice of notebook can also reflect your personal style. For example, if you’re a minimalist, a simple black Moleskine might be perfect. On the other hand, if you prefer something more colorful or unique, there are countless options to choose from.

We’ve all experienced those mid-afternoon energy slumps. Instead of reaching for a sugary snack or another cup of coffee, I prefer to keep a stash of healthy snacks in my desk drawer. Not only do they help maintain my energy levels throughout the day, but they also keep me from reaching for less healthy alternatives. Some of my favorite desk snacks include nuts, dried fruit, and granola bars.

These all have a good mix of protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep you feeling full and focused. Just be mindful of portion sizes. It can be easy to overeat when you’re snacking at your desk.

6. Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining focus and productivity at work. That’s why I always keep a water bottle in my desk drawer. Not only does it remind me to drink water throughout the day, but it also saves me from having to get up and go to the water cooler every time I’m thirsty.

There are many different types of water bottles available, but I prefer stainless steel bottles because they keep my water cold for longer. Some water bottles also have measurements on the side so you can track your water intake throughout the day. If you’re not a fan of plain water, consider getting a water bottle with a built-in infuser. This allows you to add fruits or herbs to your water for a flavor boost.

7. Hand Sanitizer

Given the current global situation, keeping hand sanitizer in your desk drawer is more important than ever. It’s a quick and easy way to keep your hands clean, especially when you’re unable to wash your hands immediately. I like to use a sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol, as recommended by the CDC.

While hand sanitizer is a great tool in your hygiene arsenal, it’s important to remember that it’s not a substitute for proper handwashing. Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds whenever possible. Also, some hand sanitizers can be drying, so consider using a moisturizing hand cream or lotion as well.

8. First Aid Kit

It’s always a good idea to keep a basic first aid kit in your desk drawer for minor injuries or illnesses. My kit includes band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and an emergency allergy medication. It’s not a substitute for professional medical help, but it can be useful for treating small cuts, headaches, or allergic reactions. Y

ou can buy pre-made first aid kits, or you can put together your own. If you choose to make your own, the Red Cross provides a list of recommended items. These include adhesive bandages, tweezers, disposable gloves, and a breathing barrier, among other things.

9. Phone Charger

In today’s digital age, having a phone charger at your desk is a must. Whether you’re using your phone for work or personal use, running out of battery in the middle of the day can be a big inconvenience. That’s why I always keep a spare charger in my desk drawer. There are many different types of phone chargers available, so it’s important to choose one that’s compatible with your device.

Some chargers also offer fast charging capabilities, which can be a lifesaver when you’re in a hurry. If you often find yourself forgetting to charge your phone, consider getting a charger with a built-in battery pack. This allows you to charge your phone on the go, even when you’re not near a power outlet.

10. Desk Organizer

Keeping your desk organized is key to maintaining productivity and focus. That’s why I always keep a desk organizer in my drawer. It helps me keep my pens, pencils, sticky notes, and other office supplies organized and easily accessible. There are many different types of desk organizers available, from simple pencil holders to multi-compartment organizers.

Your choice of organizer will depend on the number and types of items you need to store. For example, if you often use sticky notes, you might want an organizer with a dedicated compartment for them. If you have a lot of pens and pencils, a holder with individual slots might be best.

11. USB Flash Drive

A USB flash drive is a simple and convenient way to store and transfer files. Whether you’re sharing a presentation with a colleague, backing up important documents, or taking work home with you, having a flash drive handy is a must. I like to keep a couple of different sizes in my drawer, for different needs.

Flash drives come in a wide range of sizes, from a few gigabytes to several terabytes. When choosing a flash drive, consider both your storage needs and your budget. Smaller drives are cheaper and can be sufficient for basic tasks like sharing documents. However, if you often work with large files or want to back up your entire computer, you’ll need a larger drive.

Whether you’re listening to music to help you focus, joining a video conference, or just blocking out office noise, a good pair of headphones is a must. I always keep a spare pair in my desk drawer, just in case. When choosing headphones, consider both sound quality and comfort.

If you’re going to be wearing them for long periods of time, you’ll want a pair that’s comfortable and won’t cause ear fatigue. Noise-canceling headphones can be a great option if you work in a noisy office. They can help block out background noise and allow you to focus on your work.

13. Cleaning Supplies

Keeping your workspace clean is not only important for hygiene, but it can also help improve your focus and productivity. That’s why I always keep some basic cleaning supplies in my desk drawer. This includes disinfectant wipes for cleaning my desk and keyboard, and a microfiber cloth for cleaning my monitor.

In addition to these basic supplies, you might also want to consider a keyboard cleaning kit. This can include special brushes and tools for cleaning the spaces between your keys, where dust and crumbs can easily accumulate. A can of compressed air can also be useful for blowing out dust from your keyboard and other electronics.

14. Tea or Coffee

If you’re like me, a hot cup of tea or coffee is an essential part of your workday. That’s why I always keep a stash of my favorite teas and coffees in my desk drawer. Not only does it save me from having to go to the kitchen every time I want a cup, but it also allows me to choose from a variety of flavors depending on my mood.

When choosing teas and coffees for your desk, consider both taste and caffeine content. If you’re sensitive to caffeine, you might want to include some decaf options. If you’re a tea drinker, consider a variety of types, such as black, green, and herbal teas. For coffee drinkers, ground coffee can be fresher and more flavorful, but instant coffee is more convenient.

15. Personal Items

Last but not least, I always keep a few personal items in my desk drawer. These can include photos of loved ones, a favorite book, or even a small toy or trinket. These items can help make your workspace feel more personal and comfortable, and can provide a quick mental break during a busy day.

The personal items you choose will depend on your personal preferences and the nature of your work. However, it’s important to remember that while personal items can make your workspace feel more comfortable, too many can be distracting. Try to strike a balance between personalizing your space and keeping it clean and professional.
