6 Things I No Longer Keep That Reduced Clutter Fast

Let’s be honest: our lives can get pretty cluttered, can’t they? Between work, family, hobbies, and just the general chaos of life, it’s all too easy for our spaces to start resembling a scene from a reality show about hoarding. I recently took a good, hard look at my home and realized I was holding onto a lot of stuff that just… didn’t spark joy anymore. So, I decided to take the plunge and get rid of six things that helped me declutter faster than I ever imagined. Spoiler alert: I’m feeling lighter already!

1. Old Magazines and Newspapers

Let’s start with one of the biggest culprits of clutter: old magazines and newspapers. I used to think I’d want to revisit that great recipe or inspiring article one day. Spoiler alert: I never did. After a quick decluttering session, I discovered stacks of magazines dating back to the last election cycle. Out they went! Now, I find it easier to stay on top of things by just keeping a digital subscription or saving articles online. Plus, my coffee table finally has room for, you know, actual coffee cups instead of being a makeshift landfill.

2. Clothes I Haven’t Worn in Ages

Ah, the trusty wardrobe. Or should I say the treasure trove of “what was I thinking?” I had clothes in there that I hadn’t worn in years—some still had tags on them! I took a brave step and tried everything on, and oh boy, some of those outfits were not doing me any favors. If it doesn’t fit, or if I can’t remember the last time I wore it, it’s out the door. Not only did I clear up space, but I also discovered a few gems I had forgotten about. Win-win!

3. Expired Beauty Products

Who knew my bathroom cabinet was a mini time capsule? I found expired lotions, half-used shampoos, and makeup that was definitely older than my last birthday cake. I mean, do I really need to hang onto that neon pink lipstick from 2010? I think not! After tossing out the expired stuff, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. Plus, it’s nice to have a streamlined collection of products that I actually use and love.

4. Random Kitchen Gadgets

My kitchen used to be the land of forgotten gadgets. You know the ones: those fancy avocado slicers and strawberry hullers that seemed like a great idea at the time but now just take up space? After a quick inventory, I realized I only really need a solid knife and a cutting board to get the job done. I donated the extras and now my kitchen feels so much more functional. Plus, it’s easier to find my favorite spatula when it’s not buried under a mountain of “why did I buy this?”

5. Books I’ll Never Read

Books are one of those tricky areas, right? I love a good story, but I had some titles on my shelf that I’d bought with the best intentions but never cracked open. I figured it was time to face the facts: If I haven’t read it in the past year, I probably won’t. So, I donated them to my local library, and now someone else can enjoy them. Plus, my bookshelf looks much more inviting without the extra weight. And let’s be honest, I still have plenty of unread books waiting for me to get to them!

6. Digital Clutter

Last but not least, let’s talk about the digital clutter. We often forget that our devices can get just as messy as our physical spaces. I went through my phone and laptop, deleting apps I never use and clearing out photos that were just taking up space. It was like a mini therapy session! I now have a much cleaner digital environment, which helps me feel more organized and less overwhelmed. Plus, my phone actually runs faster—who knew?

So there you have it—six things I no longer keep that have made a world of difference in reducing clutter around my home. It’s amazing how liberating it feels to let go of things that no longer serve us. If you’re feeling bogged down by stuff, maybe it’s time to take a good look around and see what you can part with. You might just find that a little decluttering can lead to a lot of breathing room. Happy purging!
