We all know the saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” and that couldn’t be more true when it comes to shopping for your home. Buying secondhand not only saves you money, but it also allows you to find unique pieces that add character and charm to your space. Plus, it’s a sustainable way to shop, reducing waste and giving new life to items that might otherwise end up in a landfill. In this post, I’m going to share the nine things I always buy secondhand for my home, and why I think you should too.
1. Furniture
When it comes to furniture, buying secondhand is a no-brainer. Not only can you snag high-quality pieces at a fraction of the cost, but older furniture is often made with better materials and craftsmanship than what you’ll find in many stores today.
For example, I recently found a solid wood dining table at a local thrift store for just $50. It had a few scratches and dings, but with a little bit of sanding and a fresh coat of paint, it looks brand new. Plus, I love knowing that my table is one-of-a-kind, and not something mass-produced and sold in a big-box store.
2. Artwork
Art can be incredibly expensive, but buying secondhand allows you to curate a unique collection without breaking the bank. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different styles and mediums to create an eclectic gallery wall.
Once, I found a beautiful watercolor painting at a garage sale for only $10. It’s now the centerpiece of my living room and a great conversation starter. Remember, the value of art is subjective. It doesn’t matter how much it costs if it speaks to you.

6. Lighting

I’ve found some of my favorite lighting pieces at flea markets and thrift stores. They may need a bit of TLC, but with a little cleaning or rewiring, they can become the highlight of a room.

You can find beautiful, high-quality rugs at estate sales, online marketplaces, and even thrift stores. Don’t be afraid of a rug with a little wear and tear – it adds character!
9. Planters
Planters can be surprisingly expensive when bought new, especially if you’re looking for larger sizes or unique designs. Buying secondhand planters can save you money and help you create a unique indoor garden.
Garage sales, thrift stores, and online classifieds are all great places to look for secondhand planters. Just make sure they have proper drainage holes to keep your plants healthy.
