Customer Says an Ashley Furniture Mattress Felt Like a Concrete Slab, Corporate Picked It Up September 23, and Her $6,000 Refund Was Still Missing by October 11

A new bedroom set is supposed to be a happy purchase. A shopper who shares her story as @thechelsshift says hers turned into weeks of lost sleep and unanswered calls. According to her, a Tempur-Pedic mattress bought through Ashley Furniture felt hard as a rock, the store told her it did not give refunds, and even after the company picked the mattress up on September 23, her roughly $6,000 had not come back by October 11.

Here is what she shared, and what any shopper can do when a big furniture order does not go as planned.

What the Shopper Says Happened

As @thechelsshift tells it, she had wanted a king bedroom set for years. In July she went to Ashley Furniture and picked out the set of her dreams, spending roughly $6,000. The following week she returned with her husband and chose a soft Tempur-Pedic mattress. The furniture arrived on August 18, a few days before her birthday.

She says delivery went badly. One worker bled on the furniture. Once the sheets were on the bed, she lay down and found the mattress hard as a rock. Her husband contacted the store that night to say they had the wrong mattress and wanted it taken back. The store said it would send a ticket to corporate and that they would hear back within 24 hours.

She says no call came. They reached out three more times and heard the same promise each time. On Labor Day they went to the store in person. The manager, she says, showed no sympathy, told them the store does not give refunds, and said the most it could do was try an exchange. When she asked for the corporate customer service number, she was told it would route back to him.

She adds that the manager explained why the display mattress felt so soft, advising her to break hers in by kneeling on it for 10 to 15 minutes a day for a month.

She says the store blamed a no returns policy on Tempur-Pedic, but Tempur-Pedic told her that is Ashley Furniture’s policy and that its own is a 99 day refund guarantee, though not through Ashley. Her husband then called the support number the store had said would route back to him. It reached corporate, where a representative said the blood on the furniture meant an immediate return, and a pickup was scheduled for September 23.

They were told a refund would arrive in five to seven business days. After a vacation, they checked and the money was not there. She says a representative then said it could take three to five months, put them on hold for about 10 minutes and promised a call by 6 p.m. By the Sunday she shared this account, the call had not come. She also notes the upholstered bed has a ripped foot rail.

This is her account of events, and the company’s side is not part of what she shared.

Why Mattress Complaints Are So Common

Comfort is personal. A mattress that feels perfect to one sleeper can feel too firm or too soft to another, and most people cannot judge it until they have slept on it for several nights.

Delivery Day Is the Moment to Check Everything

Delivery day is the best time to document a problem. Once the crew leaves, it is harder to show the condition an item arrived in. If something is stained, damaged or not as described, speak up while the team is still there and ask them to note it on the paperwork.

When a Refund Takes Months

Large purchases are often paid for with financing or a credit card. Many cardholders can dispute a charge if a product is not as described or the matter is never resolved, and the rules and time limits vary, so read your card agreement or call the issuer early. If a company says a refund will take weeks or months, ask for that timeline in writing.

Tips for Big Furniture Purchases

Keep Your Paper Trail

The story of @thechelsshift is one customer’s account, but many readers will recognize the frustration. When a company stops answering and a large purchase sits unresolved, the best tools are patience, organization and a clear record of what you were told.

If you are shopping for a bedroom set, read the policies and be ready to document everything. A little preparation before the truck arrives can make a refund or replacement far easier.
