A mom found herself in a challenging predicament as she navigated the overwhelming mess in her home, shaped by years of clutter and a hoarding mentality. After some family upheaval, she decided to take proactive steps to reclaim her living space. Over the course of six weeks, she tackled the daunting task of decluttering and improving the functionality of the house, which had left her feeling unsettled and unsure about what to do next.

Initially, half the rooms lacked working electricity, causing rooms to feel dark and unwelcoming. After some focused work, there was finally light streaming into the spaces, and the parent was relieved to notice that a mouse problem had significantly dwindled. The mere act of being able to see well in the rooms and knowing that pests were largely gone was a fresh start, but it also highlighted just how difficult the overall situation was.

The house, still half-remodeled with bare subfloors and exposed drywall, bore the marks of an incomplete renovation. This chaotic space was mixed with her mom’s optimistic belief that all the necessary materials were available, just waiting to be worked on. Previously hired professionals had left a bad taste, prompting her to take things into her own hands. Surprisingly, both the mom and her daughter discovered they enjoyed the DIY tasks like flooring and drywall installation, but they first had to address the clutter that had grown uncontrollably.

For both of them, the task was complicated by their shared experience with ADHD. Their well-intentioned storage methods had manifested into a multitude of containers and bins, often leaving things more chaotic rather than organized. One mom began her focused approach by throwing away unnecessary and broken containers. Many of these items had been kept with the mindset of ‘it could be useful,’ but they had simply taken up space and created more clutter over time.

She started using colored sticky notes to mark items, asking questions like, “What was this intended for?” and “Should this be donated?” This method allowed her mom to assess things without feeling overwhelmed. It was a way to keep the momentum going without the constant interruptions that might derail their progress. Cleaning the main living areas, including vacuuming and mopping floors that hadn’t been cleaned in years, proved to be a massive undertaking, but a necessary one.

Additionally, the implementation of heavy-duty shelves helped significantly by providing a temporary place to put items while they sorted through things. One mom found that these lightweight shelves could easily be moved from room to room, making her organizing efforts much more manageable. The sheer amount of cardboard boxes stuffed with items around the house was staggering. Some were neatly labeled, implying that her mom had once thought they would be permanent storage solutions. Yet, many ended up in the trash as the parent prioritized clearing out and simplifying the space.

As they continued, they engaged in conversations about effective storage solutions. A particularly eye-opening moment occurred when they discovered that a huge desk was just a catch-all for random items, with all the drawers completely empty. The realization brought a sense of clarity and a little disbelief that it had gotten this far.

Despite the slow progress, there was excitement in the air. They set realistic goals for one, three, and six months down the line, keeping their expectations grounded. The conversation about renting a dumpster emerged as a promising step towards more significant changes, symbolizing a willingness to let go of the past. For a while, the mom had been checking trash bags to ensure nothing was truly discarded, so this shift in mindset was significant.

People had very different reactions to her journey. Some offered practical tips, while others shared their experiences, creating a supportive dialogue. One user suggested a cleaning cart, sparking curiosity about how useful it could be while remaining cautious about adding more items to the home. Having a designated area for cleaning supplies could streamline efforts, but was it truly necessary amidst the ongoing battle with clutter?

As one mom continues to manage the challenges of decluttering a space that has long been a source of stress, she’s left wondering how far she can push the renovations. The path isn’t straightforward, but every small victory brings her closer to a more functional home. What will the next step be, and how will these discussions evolve as they face the reality of the situation together?
