Roughly 10,400 sofas, loveseats, and recliners are now the subject of a fire-hazard recall after regulators found the exact electrical component behind more than 40 reports of smoking, burning, and overheating in living rooms. The pieces come from Joy Furniture’s Talan and Royce collections, and the fix involves a technician coming to the house rather than a simple refund.
The Defect Behind the Recall
The CPSC’s recall notice states plainly that “the power switch on the sofa, loveseat, or recliner can malfunction and overheat posing a risk of serious injury from a fire hazard.” That’s the power switch used to operate the pieces’ reclining or adjustment functions, not a plug or outlet issue, which is why a simple unplug-and-wait approach doesn’t resolve it.
Regulators logged 41 incidents tied to the defect, including reports of smoking, burning smells, and electrical odors, with two of those incidents escalating into actual fires. No injuries were reported, but the volume of incidents relative to the roughly 10,400 units sold is what pushed this past a routine quality issue.
Which Pieces Are Covered
The Talan collection, in medium gray, includes the sofa (JF1126-4PHL), loveseat (JF1126-5PHL), and recliner (JF1126-9PHL), sold from January 2024 through March 2026. The Royce collection, in brown, includes the sofa (JF1155-4PHL), loveseat (JF1155-5PHL), and recliner (JF1155-9PHL), sold from May 2025 through mid-May 2026. Pieces ranged from $800 to $2,200 and were sold through Raymour & Flanigan stores in Connecticut, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts.
What Owners Should Do Now
Joy Furniture and importer Raymour & Flanigan are telling anyone with an affected piece to stop using the power switch immediately and schedule a free repair, which involves an authorized technician coming to the home to install a replacement power switch at no cost. Consumers can start that process by calling 866-297-7570, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern or Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern, or by emailing joyfurniturerecall@warrantyservice.com. Full instructions are also posted at warrantyservice.com/JoyFurnitureRecall.
Anyone who bought a Talan or Royce piece secondhand should still check the model number on the frame tag, since the repair program applies regardless of where the furniture was purchased.
Because the defect sits inside the power switch itself rather than the cord or outlet, unplugging the piece overnight isn’t a reliable workaround. Regulators are recommending owners avoid using the recline or adjustment function altogether until the replacement switch has been installed, particularly in households where the furniture sits unattended for long stretches, such as a den or a finished basement.
