MIL Treated Her Like An Incubator With The First Baby, And Now That They Live 9 Hours Away She’s Suddenly Desperate To Be Involved

One mom was left unsettled when her emotional landscape shifted dramatically due to her mother-in-law’s complicated behavior. After years of cold interactions, the mom found herself grappling with her own feelings during a challenging postpartum period. The sudden shift from distant to desperate involvement shifted the dynamics sharply, leaving her unsure of how to respond.

The mother-in-law, aged 65, had always maintained a formal relationship with her son and daughter-in-law. Living in a wealthy, religious neighborhood, she seemed to keep her son at arm’s length, despite his affection for her. For years, she would only connect with him during holidays and birthdays. When the couple chose to have children and moved nine hours away, the mother-in-law’s demeanor changed, igniting feelings of resentment and confusion for the new mother.

With the birth of the first child, the mother-in-law’s actions felt more intrusive than supportive. Instead of nurturing the connection, it seemed she viewed the new mom merely as an incubator, limiting the mother’s time alone with her baby shortly after birth. As the mother navigated her postpartum challenges, her feelings toward her mother-in-law soured, leading her to restrict the frequency of visits.

Things took another turn during her recent pregnancy with twins. Despite facing health issues in her third trimester, the mother-in-law did not reach out once. When Thanksgiving rolled around, she made plans that excluded the mom and her family entirely, opting to rent a house nearby for her side of the family without consultation. In seeking clarity, the mom discovered that her mother-in-law expressed indifference about whether she would attend, unexpected words that deepened her sense of exclusion.

Not wanting to force an uncomfortable situation, the mom decided not to attend the holiday gathering. The mother-in-law responded by canceling that rental and hosting Thanksgiving at her own home instead. After the twin’s arrival, interactions didn’t improve. A text apology from her mother-in-law felt hollow when paired with the ongoing distance. When she finally asked to visit, the mother was alarmed to learn she’d booked a trip in the middle of the week while the mom was working.

Feeling bypassed and uncomfortable, the mom was frustrated that her mother-in-law seemed to want access to the babies without fully acknowledging the parent’s role. After communicating her feelings through her husband, the mother-in-law apologized but still seemed to avoid honest dialogue. During a rare moment alone together, the mother believed they might finally connect, only to be met with dismay when the mother-in-law appeared disturbed by her candor about the hardships of new motherhood. The tension was palpable, and the moment quickly shifted away from vulnerability.

Feeling manipulated and unvalued, this mom made the decision to cut off communications. Blocking her mother-in-law on social media felt like a small claim to control in the chaotic world of parenting. Despite her husband’s attempts to understand his mother’s shyness, the mom felt increasingly conflicted about the implications of distancing her children from their grandmother. She worried about depriving them of a relationship, especially when her own mother lived far away and was less accessible.

People had very different reactions to her situation. Some thought the mother was justified in limiting contact, emphasizing that she needed to protect her family’s well-being. Others pointed out that the mother-in-law might be struggling to express her feelings and suggested that communication could bridge the divide. There were also voices encouraging the mom to consider the long-term effects of creating distance, especially with young children who might benefit from having more family around.

The reality of maintaining family ties when feelings run deep and the dynamics are strained isn’t simple. The discomfort in navigating these relationships, particularly with the added weight of parenthood, often leaves individuals questioning their decisions. Should one mom continue trying to build a bridge with her mother-in-law, or is cutting ties for the sake of family peace the better option? What happens when the distance becomes too challenging to bridge?
