A 44-year-old Lakewood Ranch mother killed her two children, ages 14 and 11, inside their gated community home before taking her own life, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said. The bodies were discovered after the children’s father, who was traveling for work in South Africa, called local authorities to request a welfare check when he could no longer reach his family by phone.

Deputies forced entry into the locked residence after no one answered the door. Inside, they found all three dead in what Sheriff’s Office spokesperson told reporters was a “violent scene.” Investigators classified the case as a murder-suicide under Case Number 2026-004008 and said there was no evidence that anyone else had entered or left the home.

How the welfare check unfolded

The father, identified in local news reports as Richard Rubacha, was on a business trip in South Africa when his calls and messages to his wife went unanswered, according to WFLA. He contacted the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and asked deputies to check on the family at their home inside a gated Lakewood Ranch subdivision.

When deputies arrived, the house was locked and quiet. After repeated knocking drew no response, they forced their way inside. The sheriff’s office said the scene made clear almost immediately that this was not a routine medical call. Spokesperson Courtney Warren told Fox 13 that the three were found dead and that the circumstances pointed to the mother, Monika Rubacha, 44, as the person responsible for the children’s deaths and her own.

What investigators have confirmed

The sheriff’s office said the bodies were found in separate rooms within the home. Physical evidence at the scene led detectives to conclude that Monika Rubacha killed both children before killing herself, though the office deferred to the Manatee County Medical Examiner to determine official causes and manner of death. As of early April 2026, those results had not been publicly released.

Detectives said they found no signs of forced entry, no indication of a struggle with an outside party, and no evidence that anyone fled the residence. The sheriff’s office stated publicly that there is no ongoing threat to the surrounding community, according to WTSP.

Authorities have not disclosed what weapon or method was used, and they have not said whether there were any prior calls for service to the address or any known history of domestic disturbance. Richard Rubacha has not made a public statement.

A community struggling to process the loss

Lakewood Ranch, a master-planned community east of Bradenton, has consistently ranked among the top-selling communities in the United States and draws families with its schools, parks, and low crime rates. Neighbors told Fox 13 that the street was overwhelmed with squad cars, forensic vehicles, and television crews in the hours after the discovery.

Residents described the Rubacha family as quiet and unremarkable in the way that most families in the subdivision are: kids at local schools, cars in the driveway, waves from the mailbox. Several parents told local reporters they were now trying to explain to their own children why classmates would not be returning. The Peace River Tribune reported that the neighborhood “remains in shock.”

Local coverage has since broadened into questions about mental health resources and warning signs. The Manatee County School District has not publicly confirmed whether the children were enrolled in district schools or whether grief counselors have been deployed, though such measures are standard in cases involving student deaths in Florida.
