Savannah says she was sucked in by the commercials. They were everywhere, she says, on YouTube, on Disney Plus, all over, until she finally gave the Vinted app a try.
One month later she has sold 58 items and pocketed $430, and she is still asking herself where the catch is. Her first sale was September 2nd, and she shared her numbers on October 1st on her channel @savsaves.
“One freaking month,” she says. The $430 is all hers, because Vinted charges sellers no fees.
53 Sales, 58 Items And $430 In Her Pocket After 30 Days
Her first month brought 53 sales covering 58 items, since a couple of orders were bundles. She still has 26 active listings that have not sold.
She is no newcomer to online selling. She joined Poshmark in 2015 and has also sold on eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Mercari, and she does it around two kids, a 3-year-old and a 4-month-old, and her own business.
No Seller Fees And 99¢ Shipping Sounded Too Good To Be True
On other platforms, she says, the sites take around 15% or a flat fee, so something that sells for $25 on eBay might net her $20 before shipping, which can run five to eight dollars. On Vinted, selling a $25 item means she keeps what she sells for.
Shipping is 99¢, and buyers also pay a $1 Vinted fee. So for a $3 item the buyer pays $5 in all. She wonders how long that will last, since the app is relatively new in the US.
Listing Takes Minutes And Items Sell Almost Immediately
You add photos, a title, a description, the colors, material, size and price, and she calls it great for beginners. Quick photos are good enough, with no professional setup needed.
After posting, people favorite and buy items quickly. She says the app is heavily driven by its algorithm, so searching for a Guitar Hero game for the Wii filled her feed with Wii games, and looking for a Sonic costume for her son filled it with Sonic.
Vinted Does Not Want Full-Time Resellers, And It Bans Quickly
The app wants everyday people taking pictures on the kitchen table, she says, not warehouse operations selling 12 of the same shirt. She says it is ban-happy and will ban people very easily.
It is also extremely strict about counterfeits. She listed a pair of her boyfriend’s outdoor sandals, and within about five minutes the listing came down with an authentication notice, even after she submitted photos of the serial number, soles and logo.
Now she is nervous to list two pairs of Doc Martens, since a ban could mean losing money sitting in the account.
What Sold Best: Baby Clothes, Office Supplies, Bags And Vintage Books
Baby clothes do really well, she says, along with pens, journals, notebooks, purses and bags. She sold a mini Trader Joe’s tote bag, some of her son’s unused toys, vintage Winnie the Pooh overalls, a Broncos baby onesie and two lots of vintage Arthur books.
Vintage moves, but for mid-range prices, and people on the app want deals. Things that go for $40 on Poshmark or eBay sell for about $10 on Vinted, though she keeps the whole $10.
Bundling Beats Selling One $1.50 Onesie At A Time
People list a single baby onesie for $1.50, and she wonders whether that is worth the time to list, pack and ship. She would rather bundle five onesies for about $4 and get a bunch out the door.
Buyers can also send offers, which she can accept, counter or deny, and she can set bundle discounts for two or three items. But unlike Poshmark, an accepted offer is not automatically bought, so the buyer still has to go back in and purchase.
Shipping Is By Weight, And She Canceled Two Orders Learning That
Vinted makes the shipping label, and she packs items in her own boxes or poly mailers as long as the label is covered. She says the small class is under 1 pound, the medium class is under 2 pounds and the large class goes higher, around 5 pounds.
She picked the wrong size on two lots of vintage Arthur books because she went by what fits instead of weight, and had to cancel both orders. A cheap scale from Amazon helps, and you must drop the package at the matching carrier, such as FedEx to FedEx.
Money Hits Her Bank The Next Day, And She Is Looking For More To Sell
After the buyer accepts the item, the money lands in the Vinted wallet, and she can transfer it to the bank. After three or four withdrawals, it arrived the next day each time.
She says she is looking around her house wondering what else to sell and could keep this going for a couple hundred dollars a month.
Her Advice: Skip The Goodwill Pile And List It While Shipping Is Cheap
You do not pay to sign up, and you do not need followers. She had only about 22 followers, and most of the sales came before she told her Instagram audience.
“While it’s hot, while the shipping is low, while there’s no selling fees, get on it.” Her tip is to photograph the pile you were going to take to Goodwill and list it instead, and to keep adding new items, since she believes the app pushes your listings when you post consistently.
