One mom didn’t know what to make of the story her dad shared about Uncle Dale. It was a strange tale that involved his antics in the workplace, a tin donation box, and a tune from Disney that managed to haunt the office for good reason. The hilarity—and discomfort—of it all set the stage for a holiday gathering that most would never forget.

Uncle Dale was a senior engineer at a small firm in the Midwest and also taught engineering at a local community college. He was well-liked, especially when it came time for the annual office Christmas party. To help cover costs, Dale set up a donation box just outside his office. It was a simple tin box with a slot for anyone willing to contribute. Everyone knew about it, and donations flowed in without issue.

But one day, Dale discovered the box was completely empty, despite colleagues commenting on their contributions. Suspicion crept in, especially when Brad, the owner’s nephew, appeared nearby. Brad was known for his entitled behavior and had a reputation that wasn’t exactly stellar. The thought of him getting away with stealing from the party fund didn’t sit well with Dale.

So, instead of confronting Brad directly, Uncle Dale decided to set a trap. Leveraging his engineering skills, he installed a hidden doorbell camera aimed at the donation box. He even had a colleague boast about contributing $100 to the fund to bait the hook. When the camera recorded Brad opening the box and throwing it against the wall in frustration, Dale had the evidence he needed. But instead of taking the easy road and getting Brad fired, Dale had a more elaborate plan in mind.

After discussing the incident with his engineering students, he proposed a project: rig a new donation box to make obnoxious noise when opened. The students jumped at the chance, eager to earn extra credit. In a week, they delivered a contraption that played “Let It Go” from the movie Frozen—at maximum volume. The icing on the cake? They ensured that once opened, the box couldn’t close unless a hidden button was pressed, meaning the song would blare on a loop if anyone attempted to close it.

The next day, Dale set the bait once more, announcing that someone had donated $50 to the fund. He returned to his office, waiting for the inevitable chaos. When Brad approached the box, the familiar tune filled the air, turning heads throughout the office. Frustration soon followed as Brad wrestled with the box, trying to silence the song that everyone had grown to hate. And of course, it didn’t take long for Brad’s uncle to come investigate the commotion.

In a final act of defiance, Brad threw the box, creating a sizable dent in the wall. The uproar reached his uncle’s office, who swiftly summoned him. Fast forward a mere fifteen minutes, and Brad was out the door for good, packing up his desk with a note that read, “do not rehire; do not recommend.”

People had very different reactions to the story. Some found it amusing, saying that Uncle Dale’s prank was brilliantly executed. Others pointed out that it was a bit much for something that could have been resolved in a straightforward manner. A few even expressed sympathy for Brad, considering the fallout of losing a job over such antics.

Meanwhile, the Christmas party went on as planned. Uncle Dale shared the footage of Brad’s theft attempt, which played out to the soundtrack of “Let It Go.” It’s safe to say it was a party to remember, but the lingering question remains: was Dale’s revenge too elaborate, or was it just the right mix of engineering ingenuity and holiday spirit?
