Clothes moth larvae need weeks of total stillness and darkness to feed without interruption, conditions a folded sweater rarely gets while it’s being worn or shuffled around a closet. Extension researchers at the University of California’s Statewide IPM Program and Virginia Cooperative Extension have traced the damage to storage conditions specifically, not to the season itself. Cedar gets the credit for stopping them, but what actually protects a sweater has less to do with the wood than with what’s sealing the container it’s packed inside.

Why the Holes Show Up After Storage, Not During Wear

Clothes moth larvae are shy feeders. They favor “dark, protected areas where they are less likely to be disturbed,” according to Virginia Cooperative Extension, which is precisely why they can chew through a wool sweater at the bottom of a sealed bin for weeks before anyone notices. A sweater in regular rotation gets pulled off a hanger, worn, laundered, and refolded often enough that larvae never get the uninterrupted stretch they need. The same research notes that damage is “more likely to occur on items that are not frequently used or cleaned on a regular basis,” which describes off-season storage almost exactly. The UC IPM program adds that fabric carrying food residue, body oils, or perspiration stains is far more attractive to larvae than clean fabric, so a sweater packed away slightly worn from its last wear is already at a disadvantage before the lid even goes on.

How Long a Sweater Actually Sits in the Danger Zone

The math behind seasonal damage comes down to timing. According to UC IPM, a clothes moth’s development from egg to egg typically runs four to six months, with two generations produced in a year, and the larval feeding stage alone can last anywhere from 35 days to two and a half years depending on temperature and the quality of the food source. A sweater boxed up in April and not reopened until October sits inside that entire feeding window without a single disturbance. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s guidance reflects the same math from the prevention side, recommending that wool items be professionally or thoroughly cleaned “at least once a year” specifically because a full season of storage is long enough for an undetected problem to become a ruined garment.

Why Cedar Blocks Alone Don’t Solve It

Cedar closets and cedar blocks are marketed as a moth solution, and the wood does have a real effect, just not a durable one. UC IPM’s research found that aromatic eastern red cedar “contains an oil that can kill small larvae, but it doesn’t affect large larvae,” and that the wood “loses this quality” after several years of use as the oils fade. Larger, older larvae are exactly the ones capable of doing the most visible damage, and they are unaffected by cedar that has already lost its potency, or by cedar that was never sealed tightly enough in the first place. The same research is direct about what matters more: “having a tightly constructed chest is more important in the long run than the type of wood,” which is a detail cedar-scented sachets and decorative blocks don’t address at all.

The Storage Method That Actually Stops Them

The combination that extension researchers point to isn’t exotic. It starts with cleaning: Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends washing or dry-cleaning wool items before they go into storage, since food stains and body soil are what draw larvae in the first place. From there, both extension programs converge on airtight containment: a genuinely sealed plastic bin or a tightly built chest, rather than a cardboard box, garment bag, or loosely latched container. UC IPM notes that chemical repellents, including mothballs, only work when their vapors can concentrate in a sealed space, so an airtight seal is doing double duty, keeping adult moths from laying eggs on the fabric and letting any repellent actually reach effective concentrations. Virginia Cooperative Extension also points out that heat above 120 degrees for 30 minutes, or cold below 18 degrees for 24 hours, kills clothes moths at every life stage, giving households a way to treat items before they’re sealed away for the season.

The sweaters that come out of storage intact every spring generally weren’t protected by a fancier cedar chest — they were cleaned before they went in and packed somewhere larvae genuinely couldn’t get into.
