10 Things I Always Buy at Yard Sales

Everyone loves a good bargain, and what better way to discover hidden treasures than at a yard sale? Yard sales are a goldmine for quirky, unique, or just plain practical items that won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

The thrill of the hunt, the satisfaction of finding just what you need (or didn’t even know you needed), and the joy of giving a second life to items that might otherwise have ended up in the landfill – these are what make yard sales a favorite weekend activity for many. In this post, I’ll share with you the top 10 things I always keep an eye out for when I’m combing through yard sales.

1. Vintage Furniture

Vintage furniture is a fantastic find at yard sales. Often, these pieces have been well-cared for and boast a unique charm that modern, mass-produced furniture just can’t match. A well-loved wooden table or a retro armchair not only adds character to your living space but can also be a great investment. Some vintage pieces, particularly those from popular eras or designers, can fetch a pretty penny if you ever decide to sell them on.

Remember, scratches and minor damage can be repaired, so don’t let a few signs of wear deter you. Keep an open mind, and imagine how the piece could look with a little TLC. Sometimes, a new coat of paint or a reupholstered seat is all it takes to transform a drab piece of furniture into a stunning centerpiece.

2. Books

Books are another yard sale staple I never pass up. From old novels to cookbooks, there’s always a wealth of knowledge and entertainment to be found. They’re usually incredibly cheap and sometimes, if you’re lucky, you might stumble upon a rare or out-of-print edition.

If you’re an avid reader, yard sales are a great way to expand your library without breaking the bank. And even if you’re not much of a reader, books can serve as beautiful decor. Stack them on a coffee table, arrange them on a bookshelf, or use them to elevate other decorative items. You can’t go wrong with books.

3. Plants

Plants can be expensive, especially when they’re large or unique species. That’s why I always keep an eye out for them at yard sales. Often, people sell plants because they’re moving and can’t take them along, or they simply don’t have the time to care for them anymore. This means you can score healthy, mature plants at a fraction of their retail price.

Keeping plants in your home can have numerous benefits, from purifying the air to boosting your mood. Just make sure to ask the seller about the plant’s care requirements before buying. Not all plants are created equal, and some need more care than others.

4. Kitchenware

From vintage Pyrex dishes to high-end cookware, kitchenware is one of the best things to buy at yard sales. Not only can you find unique pieces that add a touch of charm to your kitchen, but you can also come across quality items that would cost a fortune new.

When shopping for kitchenware, check for any signs of damage. A small chip or dent might not affect functionality, but cracks or rust could be problematic. Also, remember to give any used cookware a thorough cleaning before using it.

5. Artwork

Artwork is highly subjective, and one person’s trash could very well be your treasure. Yard sales are an excellent place to find unique art pieces at bargain prices. From paintings to sculptures to handcrafted items, you never know what you might come across.

Artwork can really help to personalize a space, adding color, texture, and interest. Don’t be afraid to buy something just because it’s not ‘your style.’ Decor should evolve and change, just like we do. If a piece speaks to you, go for it!

6. Vinyl Records

In this age of digital music, there’s something magical about vinyl records. They provide a tangible, tactile experience that streaming just can’t replicate. Plus, with vinyl making a comeback, you might find some real gems at yard sales.

Even if you don’t have a record player, vinyl can be a great decorative element. Display your favorite album covers in frames for a unique and personal art installation.

7. Tools

Tools can be expensive, especially if you’re looking for quality brands. That’s why buying them used at yard sales is such a smart move. Whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or just need a decent set of tools for occasional home repairs, yard sales can be a goldmine.

Just make sure the tools are in good condition and still functional. Rust, broken parts, or significant wear and tear can be a sign to pass.

8. Vintage Clothing

Vintage clothing is another one of my favorite finds at yard sales. Not only can you score unique, high-quality pieces at a fraction of the cost, but buying used clothing is also a more sustainable choice.

When buying vintage clothes, check for any stains, tears, or signs of damage. But don’t let a missing button or a loose thread deter you – these are easy fixes that can be done at home or by a local tailor.

9. Board Games and Puzzles

You’d be surprised at how many board games and puzzles you can find at yard sales. These are great for family game nights or as a way to entertain guests. Plus, they’re usually super cheap.

Just make sure all the pieces are there. Ask the seller if they can confirm, or if the game is still sealed, even better!

10. Garden Supplies

From pots and planters to garden tools and decorations, yard sales are a great place to stock up on garden supplies. Not only can you save money, but you’re also giving these items a second life instead of them ending up in a landfill.

Just like with indoor plants, make sure to ask the seller about the care requirements for any plants you buy. And give any used garden tools a good clean before using them.

There you have it, the top 10 things I always look for at yard sales. Happy hunting!
