10 Things I Always Keep in My Kitchen Island

Every home chef knows that the kitchen is the heart of the home, and the kitchen island is arguably the most important part of the kitchen. It’s where we prep our meals, share quick bites with loved ones, and often where we gather to share stories at the end of a long day. Keeping the kitchen island stocked and organized can make your cooking experience more enjoyable and efficient. So, what are the must-have items that I always keep in my kitchen island? Here are my top 10 recommendations.

1. Cutting Boards

You can never have too many cutting boards in your kitchen. They’re not just for chopping veggies or slicing meat, cutting boards can also be used for serving cheese and charcuterie, or presenting a freshly baked loaf of bread. I like to keep a few different sizes and materials on hand – a large wooden one for everyday use, a smaller plastic one for raw meats (which is easier to sanitize), and a stylish marble one for serving. Cutting boards also make your kitchen look more professional and organized. When not in use, they can be leaned against the backsplash or hung on a wall for easy access and added decor.

2. Sharp Knives

A good set of sharp knives is a cook’s best friend. Whether you’re dicing onions, mincing garlic, or carving a roast, having the right knife for the job can make the task faster and safer. I always keep a chef’s knife, a paring knife, and a serrated knife in my kitchen island. Remember, sharp knives are actually safer than dull ones because they require less force to cut through food, reducing the risk of the knife slipping and causing an injury. Make sure you keep your knives sharp and store them properly to extend their lifespan.

3. Spice Rack

Spices can elevate your cooking from ordinary to extraordinary. That’s why I always keep a well-stocked spice rack in my kitchen island. From basics like salt, pepper, and garlic powder to more exotic spices like turmeric and cardamom, having a wide variety of spices at your fingertips can inspire you to be more adventurous in your cooking. Organizing your spices in a rack not only keeps them within easy reach, but also helps you keep track of what you have and what you need to replenish. Don’t forget to check the expiration dates and replace old spices to ensure the best flavor.

4. Mixing Bowls

Mixing bowls are a kitchen essential for everything from tossing salads to mixing batter. I always keep a set of three – small, medium, and large – in my kitchen island. Choose bowls with a non-slip base to keep them steady while you’re mixing. Look for mixing bowls that can be stacked inside each other to save space. It’s also a good idea to choose bowls with a pouring spout, which makes it easier to transfer batter into a baking tin or pancakes onto a griddle.

5. Measuring Cups and Spoons

Cooking may be an art, but baking is a science that requires precise measurements. That’s why I always keep a set of measuring cups and spoons in my kitchen island. They’re essential for recipes that need exact proportions, like cakes and cookies, but also useful for everyday cooking. Make sure you have both dry and liquid measuring cups, as they measure volumes differently. Dry measuring cups are meant to be filled to the top and leveled off, while liquid measuring cups have a spout and are meant to be filled to the marked line.

6. Oven Mitts

Safety first! Oven mitts are a must in every kitchen. They protect your hands from hot pots, pans, and baking trays, and can also be used to open tight jar lids. I always keep a pair of durable, heat-resistant oven mitts in my kitchen island. Look for oven mitts that cover your wrists to protect them from steam and splatters. It’s also a good idea to choose oven mitts that are easy to clean, either machine-washable or made of a material that can be wiped clean.

7. Kitchen Towels

Kitchen towels are one of the most used items in any kitchen. They’re not just for drying dishes, but also for wiping hands, cleaning spills, and even for holding hot handles. I always keep a stack of clean kitchen towels in my kitchen island. Choose kitchen towels made from absorbent materials like cotton or microfiber. It’s also a good idea to have different towels for different tasks – for example, one for drying dishes, one for wiping hands, and one for cleaning surfaces.

8. Fresh Herbs

Fresh herbs can transform a dish, adding color and flavor. I love to keep a little herb garden in my kitchen island. Basil, parsley, and thyme are my go-to herbs, but feel free to grow your favorites. Not only do fresh herbs taste better than dried, but they also add a beautiful touch to your kitchen decor. Plus, growing your own herbs can be a fun and rewarding hobby.

9. Recipe Box

I’m a big fan of old-fashioned recipe boxes. They’re a great way to keep your favorite recipes organized and easily accessible. Plus, they can be a beautiful addition to your kitchen decor. I always keep a recipe box in my kitchen island, filled with my tried-and-true recipes and new ones I want to try. Recipe boxes make a wonderful heirloom, passing down family recipes from generation to generation. You can also use them to store recipe cards from friends, magazine clippings, or printed recipes from the internet.

10. A Good Cookbook

Last but not least, I always keep a good cookbook in my kitchen island. Whether you’re a seasoned home cook or a beginner, a cookbook can provide inspiration and guidance. Choose one that aligns with your cooking style and dietary preferences. A cookbook can also make a beautiful display on your kitchen island. And who knows, it might even inspire you to try a new recipe or cooking technique.
