11 Things I Always Do Before a Big Clean

Cleaning may seem like a daunting task, especially when it comes to big, deep cleaning jobs. However, with the right planning and preparation, it can turn into an almost therapeutic task that leaves you with a sparkling, fresh environment.

This blog post will guide you on how to get ready for a big clean, making the task less overwhelming and more enjoyable. Here are 11 things I always do before initiating a big clean.

1. Make a Cleaning Plan

Before I even touch a dust rag or a mop, I sit down with a pen and paper and make a cleaning plan. This involves walking through each room and noting down what needs to be cleaned, repaired, or replaced. Having a visual representation of the task at hand helps me to stay organized and focused, and it also gives me a sense of accomplishment as I tick off each task.

For instance, in the kitchen, I might note that the oven needs deep cleaning, the cupboard doors need wiping, and the fridge needs defrosting. Breaking down the cleaning task into smaller, manageable tasks makes it seem less daunting and also ensures I don’t overlook anything.

2. Gather Cleaning Supplies

The next step is gathering all the necessary cleaning supplies. I always ensure that I have enough supplies for the job to avoid wasting time running out to the store in the middle of cleaning. This includes cleaning solutions, scrub brushes, microfiber cloths, gloves, mop, and bucket, among others.

I also make sure to have specific tools for specific tasks, such as an oven cleaner for the oven or a grout brush for the bathroom tiles.

3. Clear the Clutter

Before I start cleaning, I make sure to clear any clutter. This makes the cleaning process smoother and more efficient. I start by putting away any items that are out of place and throwing away any trash. For items that are no longer needed or used, I put them in a separate box for donation or recycling. This not only makes the cleaning easier but also helps to declutter and organize the house.

When faced with a big cleaning job, it’s important to prioritize tasks. I always start with the most challenging or time-consuming tasks first when my energy levels are still high. For instance, I might start with cleaning the oven or scrubbing the bathroom tiles. By dealing with the most difficult tasks first, I ensure that I don’t leave them unfinished when I start to tire.

Cleaning often involves the use of cleaning solutions that can emit strong fumes. To ensure a safe and comfortable cleaning environment, I always make sure to open windows and doors for good ventilation.
