11 Things I Always Do Before Leaving for Vacation

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned the hard way that preparation is the key to a smooth and relaxing vacation. You don’t want to be halfway to your destination, only to realize you’ve forgotten your passport, your charger, or even worse, your tickets!

The last thing you want while finally taking that much-needed break is to be stressed out over things that could have been easily avoided with a bit of planning. So, I’ve put together a list of 11 things I always do before leaving for vacation, which has made my trips a lot more enjoyable and worry-free.

1. Research my Destination

Before I even think about packing, I spend time researching my destination. This includes everything from the weather, local customs, and points of interest, to the local cuisine and any events that might be taking place during my stay.

Having a good understanding of where I’m going helps me pack appropriately and plan my itinerary. For example, if I’m visiting a country during its rainy season, I’ll make sure to pack a good quality raincoat and shoes that can handle the wet weather. If there are any local festivals or events happening, I make sure to find out the details so I can attend and experience the local culture.

2. Make a Packing List

Making a packing list is critical to ensuring I have everything I need for my trip. I categorize items into different sections such as clothes, toiletries, electronics, documents, and miscellaneous items. This makes it easy to see at a glance if I have everything I need.

I start making the list a few days before I leave, so I have time to purchase any items I may be missing. For example, if I realize I don’t have a travel adapter for the country I’m visiting, I have time to go out and buy one. A packing list also helps prevent overpacking, as it forces me to think about what I actually need.

3. Notify my Bank

Before heading off on vacation, I always notify my bank and credit card companies of my travel plans. This is to prevent my cards from being blocked due to suspicious foreign transactions.

Many banks offer an easy online service for travel notifications. I usually include the dates of my trip and the countries I’ll be visiting. This step gives me peace of mind knowing I won’t have any issues accessing my money while abroad.

4. Check-in Online

Checking in online saves me a lot of time at the airport. Most airlines allow you to check-in 24 hours before your flight and select your seats.

This gives me the chance to choose a seat I prefer, whether it’s a window seat for the views, or an aisle seat for the extra legroom. Not having to rush to the airport to check-in also makes the start of my vacation more relaxed.

5. Charge All Electronics

Before I leave, I make sure all my electronics are fully charged. This includes my phone, laptop, camera, and any other devices I’m bringing with me.

There’s nothing worse than arriving at your destination with a dead phone and not being able to navigate to your hotel or contact anyone. By charging everything beforehand, I ensure I have access to my devices when I need them.

6. Double Check Travel Documents

A few days before my trip, I double-check all my travel documents. This includes my passport, flight tickets, accommodation bookings, travel insurance, and any visas I may need.

I also make sure to have a copy of these documents in a separate place, in case the originals get lost. This can be as simple as taking photos of them on my phone, or emailing copies to myself.

7. Clean the House

Before leaving, I always give my house a good clean. There’s nothing worse than coming home to a messy house after a relaxing vacation.

I also make sure to take out the trash, clear out the fridge of any perishable items, and do the laundry. This way, I can come home to a clean and fresh house, prolonging that vacation feeling a little longer.

8. Pay Any Upcoming Bills

To prevent any late fees or stress while on vacation, I make sure to pay any bills that are due while I’m away. This can be done easily online or by setting up automatic payments.

This also includes any subscriptions or memberships I may have. By taking care of these beforehand, I can enjoy my vacation without worrying about any financial obligations back home.

9. Arrange for Pet or Plant Care

If you have pets or plants, arranging for their care while you’re away is crucial. I usually ask a friend or neighbor to help, or hire a professional pet or plant sitter.

Giving them a detailed care guide ensures they’re well looked after. This way, I can enjoy my trip knowing my pets and plants are in good hands.

10. Check Home Security

Before I leave, I double-check all windows and doors are locked. If I have a home security system, I make sure it’s armed.

I also let a trusted neighbor know I’m away, so they can keep an eye on my property. By taking these steps, I ensure my home is secure while I’m away.

11. Relax and Get Excited

The last thing I do before leaving for vacation is to relax and get excited for my trip. Whether it’s watching a movie about my destination, listening to a local music playlist, or reading a book set there, I immerse myself in the upcoming adventure.

After all, the anticipation of a trip is half the fun! By taking these steps before leaving for vacation, I ensure I can fully enjoy my trip without any unnecessary stress or worry.
