12 Things I Wish I’d Never Bought for My Bedroom

We’ve all made purchases that we later regret, and the bedroom is no exception. In an effort to make our private sanctuary more comfortable, stylish, or functional, we can sometimes end up with items that do more harm than good. From furniture that’s impractical to gadgets that are more distracting than useful, these are the things that end up gathering dust, causing discomfort, or ruining the aesthetic of our bedrooms. Let’s take a look at the 12 things I wish I’d never bought for my bedroom.

1. Expensive Bed Sheets

I once splurged on a set of fancy Egyptian cotton bed sheets, thinking that they would enhance my sleep quality. Unfortunately, they turned out to be high maintenance, requiring special washing instructions and frequent ironing to prevent wrinkles. The high thread count also made them quite heavy and less breathable than I’d anticipated.

Moreover, the price tag didn’t necessarily translate to longevity. After a few months of use, I noticed some pilling and signs of wear. I realized that moderately priced, easy-care sheets made of quality materials, such as percale or linen, could have been just as comfortable and durable, without the added hassle or cost.

2. Bulky Furniture

In an attempt to maximize storage, I bought a huge armoire that ate up a significant amount of floor space. It made my bedroom feel cramped and restricted my movement around the room. It also created visual clutter, which was far from the serene and spacious vibe I was aiming for.

When it comes to bedroom furniture, it’s essential to consider scale and proportion. Smaller, multifunctional pieces or built-in storage solutions can often provide the same utility without overwhelming the space. Remember, a bedroom should first and foremost be a place of rest and relaxation, not a storage depot.

3. Overhead Lighting

I installed a bright, overhead light fixture in my bedroom, thinking it would be practical for reading and other activities. However, I soon discovered that it created a harsh, uninviting atmosphere in the evening. It also interfered with my sleep schedule, as exposure to bright light before bed can disrupt the production of the sleep hormone melatonin.

For the bedroom, softer, layered lighting is a better choice. A combination of table lamps, floor lamps, and wall-mounted lights can provide the right amount of illumination for different tasks and moods, without disrupting your sleep.

4. Uncomfortable Chair

I once bought a stylish but ergonomically challenging chair for my bedroom. It looked great, but was so uncomfortable that I hardly ever used it, and it ended up being a waste of money and space.

Comfort should always be a top priority when choosing bedroom furniture. A cozy armchair or a well-padded bench can provide a comfortable spot for reading or lounging and contribute positively to the overall comfort and functionality of the room.

5. Loud Wall Clock

I purchased a large, vintage-style wall clock, thinking it would add character to my bedroom. However, the ticking noise it produced was surprisingly loud and became a constant source of irritation, especially at night when everything else was quiet.

For a bedroom, a silent, non-ticking wall clock is a more sensible choice. Alternatively, you may want to forego a wall clock altogether and use an alarm clock or your phone to keep track of time.

6. Cheap Mattress

In an attempt to save money, I bought a low-priced mattress. It turned out to be an unwise decision as it didn’t provide proper support and comfort, leading to back pain and restless nights.

Investing in a good-quality mattress is essential for good sleep and overall health. It’s one area where you shouldn’t skimp on quality or comfort. Take the time to research and test various models to find the one that’s right for you.

7. Excessive Decorative Pillows

I went overboard with decorative pillows, thinking they would make my bed look like those in luxury hotel rooms or home decor magazines. However, removing and rearranging them every day became a tiresome chore.

A few well-chosen decorative pillows can add color and personality to your bedroom, but too many can become a nuisance. Opt for a manageable number that enhances the look of your bed without causing unnecessary work.

8. Space Heater

I bought a space heater for those chilly winter nights. However, it was noisy and made the air in my bedroom dry and uncomfortable.

Instead, consider investing in quality bedding and warm, cozy sleepwear. A heated mattress pad or an electric blanket can also provide warmth without the noise or dry air issues associated with space heaters.

9. Large Area Rug

I purchased a large area rug to add warmth and texture to my bedroom. However, it was difficult to clean and attracted dust and allergens.

Smaller, easier-to-clean rugs or washable rug covers are a better choice for the bedroom. They can still provide warmth and comfort underfoot without the cleaning hassle.

10. TV

I installed a TV in my bedroom, thinking it would be nice to watch shows or movies in bed. However, it became a distraction and affected my sleep quality.

Experts recommend keeping TVs out of the bedroom to promote better sleep. If you insist on having one, make sure it’s not the last thing you look at before you go to sleep.

11. Large Artwork

I bought a large piece of artwork for my bedroom wall. However, it was too big and overwhelmed the space, making the room feel smaller.

When selecting artwork for your bedroom, consider the scale and proportion. Smaller pieces or a gallery wall can add interest and personality without overwhelming the space.

12. Brightly Colored Bedding

I once bought brightly colored bedding to add a pop of color to my bedroom. However, it was too vibrant and disturbed the calm, soothing atmosphere I wanted in my bedroom.

When choosing bedding, opt for calming, neutral colors or soft, muted hues. You can add color and pattern with throw pillows or accessories that can be easily changed out.
