16 Things in Your Living Room a Professional Organizer Would Purge

Have you ever looked around your living room and felt overwhelmed with the amount of stuff you have? As a professional organizer, I see this issue all the time. The living room, in particular, tends to accumulate a lot of unnecessary items. Here are 16 things in your living room a professional organizer would suggest you purge.

1. Outdated Magazines and Newspapers

If you haven’t touched that pile of magazines and newspapers in months, consider it a sign that you’re ready to let go. These materials often become clutter that just gathers dust. Consider transitioning to digital subscriptions or keep only the most recent copies.

2. Unused Electronics

Old phones, outdated gaming systems, and broken gadgets have no place in your living room. These items often end up taking valuable space and create an unsightly mess. When possible, recycle, donate, or properly dispose of these items.

3. Old DVDs and CDs

With the rise of streaming platforms, DVDs and CDs have become somewhat obsolete. If you have a collection gathering dust, it’s time to consider digitizing the ones you love and donating the rest.

4. Extra Cords and Cables

We all have that drawer or box full of random cords and cables. If you don’t know what they’re for or haven’t used them in over a year, it’s safe to say you can let them go.

5. Unwanted Gifts

It’s okay to let go of items that you didn’t choose for yourself and don’t serve any purpose in your life. Consider donating these items to someone who may actually appreciate them.

6. Unused or Broken Furniture

If it’s broken, either fix it or dispose of it. If it’s not being used, consider whether it’s worth keeping. Space is a valuable asset in any living room.

7. Old or Unused Pillows and Throws

Pillows and throws are great for adding comfort and style to your living room. However, if they’re worn out or no longer match your décor, it’s time to replace or get rid of them.

8. Old Artwork and Decorations

If you’re no longer in love with a piece of decor or artwork, there’s no reason to keep it. Your living room should only contain items that bring you joy and reflect your personal style.

9. Out of Date Books

Books can add a nice aesthetic to a living room, but if they’re just collecting dust, it’s time to donate them. Keep only the books that you plan to read or hold sentimental value.

10. Unused Vases and Plant Pots

Vases and plant pots can accumulate over time, especially if you like to change up your decor. If you have more than you need, consider donating the surplus to a local charity or selling them.

11. Old Curtains and Blinds

Old, faded or out-of-style window treatments can bring down the overall aesthetic of your living room. Consider updating them for a fresh look.

12. Old Kids’ Toys

Kids grow up fast, so it’s only natural that they’ll outgrow their toys. If your children no longer play with certain toys, consider donating them.

13. Unused Exercise Equipment

If you’ve got exercise equipment collecting dust in your living room, it might be time to reconsider its place. If you’re not using it, it’s just taking up valuable space.

14. Unnecessary Paperwork

We often end up storing bills, documents, and other paperwork in our living rooms. If these are no longer needed, it’s time to shred and recycle them.

15. Old Rugs

Rugs can dramatically change the look of your living room. However, worn-out or stained rugs can make the room look shabby. If cleaning doesn’t improve their appearance, it’s time to let them go.

16. Excess Candles

Candles can create a cozy atmosphere but having too many can create clutter. Keep only those that you really use and enjoy. Don’t forget to recycle or reuse the containers of finished candles.
