Father Among Two Arrested in Killing of Young Mother in Sunnyvale — Case Raises Questions About Motive

A young California mother’s killing is now leading to two arrests, including the father of her child, after investigators say they spent nearly two months building the case.

Authorities in Sunnyvale said 24-year-old Kembery Chirinos-Flores was found shot to death inside a vehicle on the night of January 7 at the Plaza Del Rey mobile home park. By the time officers arrived, the suspects had already fled.

Now, police say two men are in custody in connection with her death.

The case appears to center on someone from her past

According to investigators, one of the men arrested was Gerzon Chirinos, also known as Gerzon Chirinos-Munguia, who police said had previously been in a relationship with Chirinos-Flores.

Authorities also said the two shared a child.

That detail immediately shifts how this case is being viewed, because it no longer reads like a random act of violence. It reads like a killing tied to someone who already had a direct and deeply personal connection to the victim.

Police also said the suspect had a prior domestic violence offense involving another partner, which adds another disturbing layer to the case.

The second man arrested was identified as Alfonso Inestroza, also known as Franquin Inestroza-Martinez, of Hollister.

According to police, he was taken into custody the same day as Chirinos and also had an outstanding arrest warrant tied to an unrelated murder case in New Jersey.

Investigators say the victim was a hardworking mother of a 5-year-old boy

At a police briefing, officials described Chirinos-Flores as a young mother who was working two jobs and raising her son.

That is one of the details that makes the case especially hard to shake. She was not only 24, but was also caring for a young child while trying to build a life for herself and her family.

Police said the boy was not physically harmed in the shooting.

He was later placed in the custody of child protective services.

That part of the story leaves its own kind of heartbreak behind. A 5-year-old did not just lose his mother in an act of violence. He is now growing up with the aftermath of an arrest that police say involves his own father.

Police are calling the arrests a major step, but the case is still moving forward

Both men were booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of homicide.

Authorities described the arrests as an important step toward justice, but this case is clearly far from over. Prosecutors will now have to lay out what evidence connects each man to the killing and what role they believe each one played.

Still, after weeks with no arrest, the case has now taken a much sharper turn.

What makes this story especially devastating is how many layers of loss sit inside it at once: a 24-year-old mother killed, a 5-year-old left without her, and investigators saying the violence may have come from someone who was already tied to her life forever.
