Fire Prevention Week Is Almost Here, and NFPA’s Own Data Shows Nearly Three in Five Home Fire Deaths Happen in Homes With No Working Smoke Alarm at All

Three of every five home fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarm at all, or with alarms present but not working, according to the National Fire Protection Association’s own analysis of U.S. home fires. The breakdown is stark: 37% of victims died in homes with zero smoke alarms, and another 23% died in homes where an alarm existed but failed to sound, per the NFPA’s Smoke Alarms in US Home Fires report. With Fire Prevention Week running October 4-10, 2026, that 60% figure is the number NFPA wants households to sit with before the campaign’s fire trucks and school assemblies roll out this year.

A Problem of Coverage, Not Just Failure

The alarm-ownership numbers look reassuring on the surface. NFPA’s most recent household survey found 99% of U.S. homes report having at least one smoke alarm installed, up from 88% in 1994. But ownership isn’t the same as protection. Roughly 61% of households test their alarms less often than the recommended monthly schedule, and 33% say they never test them at all, according to that same NFPA data. Perhaps more troubling: 16% of households believed their alarms were fully functional when tested, only to discover at least one unit was dead — batteries missing or drained without anyone noticing.

That gap between “we have alarms” and “our alarms work” is where NFPA’s 60% statistic comes from. It isn’t a story about households skipping smoke alarms altogether, though some still do. It’s mostly a story about alarms quietly failing in the background — dead batteries, alarms past their service life, units that were never tested after installation — until the one night they’re needed and don’t go off.

Why the Failures Happen

The mechanics behind that failure rate are almost always mundane. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has long pointed to the same root cause across millions of non-functioning alarms nationwide: batteries that are dead or missing. NFPA’s more recent household data adds another layer — only 51% of households could accurately state how old their smoke alarms were, even though the devices themselves have a hard expiration date. Smoke alarms don’t fail gracefully at the ten-year mark; their sensors degrade gradually, which means a homeowner can pass every monthly “test button” check for years while the unit’s actual smoke-sensing capability quietly declines.

Power source matters more than most people assume, too. NFPA’s underlying fire data shows hardwired smoke alarms operated successfully in 93% of fires serious enough to trigger them, compared to 79% for battery-only units — and the death rate per reported fire runs 2.6 times higher when the home’s only alarms are battery-powered. None of that means battery alarms are useless; it means they demand more consistent upkeep than most households are actually giving them.

What Fire Prevention Week Is Actually Asking Households To Do

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” centers on lithium-ion battery risks from phones, e-bikes and other rechargeable devices — a real and growing hazard NFPA has prioritized for two years running. But the campaign’s broader home-fire-safety message hasn’t changed: test every smoke alarm monthly using the test button, replace batteries at least once a year (or sooner if the low-battery chirp starts), and replace the entire unit once it hits ten years old, since the sensor itself degrades regardless of battery freshness. Install alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including basements — a layout the NFPA and most local fire codes have recommended for years, and one plenty of homes still fall short of. NFPA’s fire data also shows why timing matters so much: more than half of home fire deaths in homes with no alarm or no working alarm happened between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when residents are asleep and depend entirely on the alarm to wake them before smoke fills the room.

None of this requires a big-budget renovation. A basic smoke alarm costs a few dollars, and testing one takes seconds. What the NFPA’s own numbers show is that the gap between owning an alarm and actually being protected by one is where most of the risk quietly lives — not in the small number of homes with no alarm in sight, but in the much larger share of homes that assume the alarm on the ceiling is doing its job.
