Human children take roughly 22 years to reach full brain maturity — the longest developmental runway of any species on record — and a new review out of Ohio State University argues that the scattered, easily-derailed attention parents spend years trying to correct isn’t a flaw in that design. It’s the design working exactly as intended. The review, published in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences and detailed in an Ohio State University news release, reframes a behavior most adults have been trained to see as a problem to manage into something closer to a feature doing exactly what evolution built it to do.

The Adult Comparison That Makes the Case

The researchers didn’t just theorize about why children explore broadly instead of focusing narrowly — they tested it on adults directly. When the research team deliberately overloaded adult participants’ working memory with a demanding dual-task challenge, those adults stopped making strategic, focused choices and started exploring broadly instead, mirroring the exact attention pattern typically seen in five-year-olds. Vladimir Sloutsky, the Ohio State psychology professor who led the work, put it plainly in the university’s release: “children tend to explore broadly, and, despite its costs, exploration confers important benefits.” In other words, an overwhelmed adult brain and a young child’s brain default to the same wide, unfiltered scanning mode — the difference is that adults usually have enough working memory capacity to override it, and children, by design, don’t yet.

Why “Distributed Attention” Isn’t the Same as Broken Attention

The distinction the review draws is between mature working memory, which lets a brain filter out distractions and lock onto one task, and what the researchers call distributed attention, the default mode for a developing brain that hasn’t built that filtering capacity yet. Adults use distributed attention only when something has knocked their working memory offline — sleep deprivation, stress, or in the study’s case, an artificially imposed second task. Children live in that mode most of the time, not because something is wrong, but because their working memory system genuinely hasn’t finished coming online. Judged against an adult standard of focus, that looks like a deficit. Judged against what a developing brain is actually optimized to do, it looks like a strategy.

The Evolutionary Argument for Staying Unfocused

The review’s broader argument connects this to why humans take so much longer to mature than almost any other species. A longer runway of immaturity, the researchers argue, correlates with larger brain size and more knowledge acquired before the brain locks into an adult pattern of selective, efficient — but narrower — attention. A child who explores everything indiscriminately for years is gathering broad information about a world that hasn’t yet been fully mapped by their own experience. Locking onto one narrow interest too early, before there’s enough of that broad map in place, risks getting stuck with an incomplete picture right at the moment a child’s environment might shift and demand something totally different from what they already know. Staying open and easily distracted, on this account, is a hedge against committing too early to knowledge that might turn out to be wrong or incomplete.

What This Actually Changes for the Adults in the Room

None of this means every classroom disruption or unfinished homework assignment should be waved off as neurologically inevitable — children still benefit from structure, and attention does mature with practice and support. But the research offers a genuinely useful reframe for parents and teachers who’ve spent years treating a five-year-old’s wandering focus as a discipline problem to be corrected as early as possible. The same overloaded, split-attention state that makes a stressed-out parent forget why they walked into a kitchen is, by this research’s own framing, functionally identical to what’s happening inside a five-year-old’s head on an ordinary Tuesday. It’s worth sitting with that side by side: the adult calls it burnout. The child is just being a child.
