Man plans Boston Commons ice-skating date and Mario show but cancels after hours of silence—then date suddenly calls back with unexpected confession

Dating can be unpredictable, but one man’s story about a planned night out in Boston has people online debating whether he overreacted—or simply refused to waste his time.

In a viral TikTok, creator @matt_lucena shared the story of a date that slowly fell apart before it even started, after the woman he was supposed to meet barely responded all day and then called him back with a surprising explanation.

How the Date Was Supposed to Happen

According to the creator, he originally met the woman outside while they were both out in public.

He admitted that some people warn against meeting potential partners that way, but he said they had a good conversation and she seemed like someone worth getting to know. So he decided to ask her out.

At first, things already felt messy.

The two had scheduled a date, but the day before it was supposed to happen, she texted him saying she had forgotten she had work. He said he didn’t make a big deal out of it and agreed to reschedule.

Eventually they settled on a new plan.

The woman suggested going ice skating at Boston Common. The creator said he loved the idea and began planning the rest of the evening around it.

A Packed Night of Plans

The night before the date, they spoke on the phone and agreed to reconnect the next day.

But the day of the date started early for him. He explained that it had snowed overnight, forcing him to go out around 4 a.m. before returning home around 8 or 9 a.m.

After getting some sleep, he woke up around noon and sent her a message at about 1 p.m.

In the text, he said he had already started planning the night.

He suggested they go ice skating and then attend a showing of Super Mario content at a theater later in the evening, with tickets he had arranged for 7:15 p.m. He also mentioned grabbing food since they would probably be hungry after skating.

He even joked that he might fall on the ice because he had never gone skating before.

Then he waited.

Hours of Silence

An hour passed.

Then another.

By 2 p.m., there was still no response.

By 3 p.m., nothing.

By 4 p.m., still nothing.

The creator pointed out that he lives about an hour away from Boston, while she lived much closer to the city, meaning he would need time to travel if the date was actually happening.

At that point, he began to assume he had been stood up.

An Unexpected Call From His Brother

Around 4:30 p.m., his brother called with a problem.

Because of the snow the night before, his brother had parked in the wrong spot on a main road and his car had been towed.

His brother asked if he could help pick it up.

The creator told him he technically had a date that night—but since the woman hadn’t responded all day, he was already considering canceling anyway.

A Text Finally Arrives

Then, around 5 p.m., the woman finally texted him.

Her message was brief: she had just left the gym and was heading home.

That was it.

According to him, she didn’t acknowledge the earlier message about ice skating, the show tickets, or the plans he had tried to organize for the night.

He said that lack of effort bothered him.

Feeling like she wasn’t actually interested, he decided to cancel the date.

The Instant Callback

He called her to explain, but she didn’t answer.

So he sent a message saying the night probably wasn’t going to work out.

Almost immediately after sending the text, she called him back.

During the call, he told her directly that he didn’t like how she had ignored his earlier messages. He said people are constantly on their phones, especially in their generation, and he felt she had clearly seen the text but chosen not to respond.

He also explained that he was going to help his brother deal with the towed car instead.

At first, she told him she appreciated his honesty.

But then she added something unexpected.

She suggested he didn’t need to lie about his brother’s car getting towed.

To prove her point, she even referenced a message where she had apparently asked someone named Matt for a ride after their own car got towed earlier that day.

One Last Phone Call

Later, while he was driving to his brother’s house—about 30 minutes away—she called again.

He turned the car around to continue the conversation.

During that call, she explained that she felt she needed to work on herself and said she had originally wanted to meet him as friends.

The creator said he accepted that explanation at first.

But then he came to a different conclusion.

In his opinion, the reason for the strange behavior was much simpler: she likely already had a boyfriend.

Viewers Had Plenty to Say

The story quickly drew reactions from viewers in the comments.

Some sympathized with him and said they would have been frustrated too. One person wrote that they were “annoyed” on his behalf.

Others focused on the moment where he said she chose not to respond, with one commenter emphasizing: “You chose NOT to answer.”

A few viewers joked about unrelated details in the video—like the way he peeled an orange while telling the story—while others simply teased that they would never stand him up on a date.

Still, many commenters agreed on one thing: modern dating can feel chaotic, and stories like this are becoming far more common.
