Mercari Offers Free Shipping On Orders Of $50 Or More Through January 4, But The Fine Print Caps Weight At Five Pounds And Single Items Must Use Best Rate

Holiday selling season is almost here, and Mercari just handed resellers a reason to pay attention. The online marketplace is offering free shipping on bigger orders for the next few months, but as with most deals, the details decide who really benefits.

A stack of brown gift boxes is ready for the holidays.

According to a report published October 19, 2026 by Value Added Resource, Mercari emailed sellers on October 17 to say that carrier rates went up on October 19. Then came the sweetener: a free shipping promotion that runs from October 22, 2026 through January 4, 2027.

How the free shipping deal works

The promotion applies to orders of $50 or more that weigh no more than 5 pounds. If a buyer’s order meets both of those conditions, shipping is free for the buyer during the promotion window.

Two more rules from the report are worth knowing:

  • Single items must use Mercari Best Rate, the prepaid shipping option, to qualify.
  • Bundles from the same seller count, so a buyer who picks up several of your items can reach the $50 mark together.

That bundle rule is the quiet gem. A buyer who finds a $20 item and a $35 item from the same seller can now cross the line, and the shipping is on the house. For a seller, that is a natural way to move more stuff in one package.

The fine print that trips people up

The weight cap is the first thing to check. Five pounds sounds like plenty until you start weighing real items. A pair of boots, a heavy coat, a stack of books or a cast iron pan can blow past it without much trouble. If an item or bundle goes over 5 pounds, the free shipping offer does not apply, so you will want to weigh things before you promise anything to a buyer.

The second catch is the Best Rate requirement for single items. If you are used to choosing your own shipping method, you will need to use Mercari’s prepaid option on these orders if you want them to qualify. Take a minute to understand how it works before the first sale comes in so it does not slow you down.

Also remember why this promotion landed right after a rate increase. Carrier rates rose on October 19, so shipping costs more than it did last week. The free shipping offer is meant to keep buyers moving, but it is worth thinking about how the new rates affect your pricing and your profit.

Seller protection to keep in mind

The report also covers shipping protection for sellers. Coverage is up to $200 for standard, economy and Media Mail shipping, and up to $20 for First Class Envelope. A new option called Shipping Protection Plus+ was announced as coming soon.

The gap between $200 and $20 matters. If you send something worth more than a few dollars, think twice about using First Class Envelope, because the protection is much smaller. That is the kind of detail that only matters on the one day a package goes missing, and by then it is too late to choose differently.

How to make the most of it

If you resell for extra cash, whether it is outgrown clothes, toys, kitchen gear or the treasures coming out of a closet cleanout, here is how to use this window wisely.

  1. Group your listings. Items that go well together, such as a set of kids’ books or a matching pair of tops, make it easy for a buyer to reach $50 in one order.
  2. Mention the free shipping in your listing when it applies. Buyers love the word free, and it can tip an undecided shopper.
  3. Weigh everything before you list it. Keep orders at or under 5 pounds if you want the offer to apply.
  4. Use Best Rate for single items. That is the requirement, so build it into your routine.
  5. Match the protection to the value. Send higher value items with a service that carries bigger coverage.
  6. Mark January 4, 2027 on your calendar. After that, the offer ends, and you will want to adjust your listings and pricing again.

The bigger picture

The timing is smart on Mercari’s part. Many people shop online for gifts and household needs at this time of year, and a shipping break can push a shopper from browsing to buying. For sellers, that means more eyes on your listings, and it may be a good time to clear out the things that have been sitting around.

It is also a reminder to read promotions all the way through. A free shipping banner sounds like a gift, but the weight limit, the minimum order and the prepaid shipping rule decide whether your order counts. Sellers who read the fine print can use the deal. Sellers who skip it may find out the hard way that an order did not qualify.

So if you have been waiting for a reason to list that pile of things you have been meaning to sell, this might be it. Bundle smart, watch the scale, and let the free shipping do some of the selling for you.
