A mom who posts on Instagram as liaandmaya filmed a short experiment at a restaurant table, and the text she put across the middle of the screen explains the whole premise: “When I want some of her fries vs my husband.” The reel runs about 25 seconds, and in that time her daughter handles the two parents very differently.
The girl sits at a marble table in a pink varsity-style jacket with Minnie Mouse on the front. A plate of thick-cut fries is in front of her, a small dish of ketchup sits beside it, and a pink kids’ tablet case with a blue handle is propped at the edge of the table. As the clip opens she is eating on her own, a fork in one hand and the other hand resting against her cheek, with a bright dining room and a wall of windows behind her.
Then mom’s hand comes into the frame from behind the camera, heading for the plate. She comes away with a single fry and holds it up between her fingers. The girl stops eating and looks straight into the lens. In the next moments she stretches her arm out over the plate until her fingers are on the fry in her mom’s hand. Shortly after that, mom’s hand is out of the shot, and the girl has one hand raised and then pressed flat against her chest.
The second half is the “vs my husband” part. The camera swings to the left, where a man’s arm is resting on the same table. Over the next few seconds the girl reaches out in his direction, holds a fry up in her fingers, and dips back to the plate. Then the shot follows her hand over to her dad, a bearded man who leans in from the side while she holds a fry to his mouth. The camera comes back to her afterward, and she is at her plate again with her fork, facing the lens, with the fries still piled in front of her.
The caption is one line: “‘Have a girl’ they said…” followed by a facepalm emoji and the hashtags #fatherdaughter, #fatherdaughterlove, #girldad, #mommylife and #daughters. That line and the sentence on screen are all the framing she gives it. The parent holding the phone gets a small hand coming back for the fry, and the parent across the table gets served.
Watch the two halves side by side and one difference stands out that has nothing to do with which parent is the favorite. In the first half, an adult hand goes to the girl’s plate and a fry leaves it. In the second, the girl is the one who picks the fry and decides where it goes. Plenty of children who guard their food are generous when the giving is their own idea, which makes this an easy thing to try at home. Instead of reaching, ask, and let the child choose which one to hand over.
Asking has a second benefit. Most parents spend years telling kids not to grab from someone else’s plate, and a child notices when the rule only runs in one direction. A quick “May I have one?” costs nothing, and it shows the manners you want back the next time she wants a bite of your dessert.
If the fries are really the point, the simplest fix is the order itself. A plate that belongs to one child is hers to protect. A plate set in the middle of the table and described as being for everyone is a different thing in a child’s mind, and it settles the ownership question before anyone gets territorial.
It also helps to notice what this mom did with the moment. Nothing on screen turns into a standoff over a fry in the middle of a restaurant. She kept filming, followed her daughter’s hand over to dad, and saved her complaint for a caption with a facepalm emoji. A child who is not made to feel she did something wrong by sharing with one parent is more likely to keep sharing, and the parent who came up short gets a funny video out of it.
For any parent who has been on the wrong side of a moment like this one, the tags she chose are a useful reminder of how she reads it. She filed the clip under #fatherdaughterlove and #girldad, not under anything about being left out. A child handing her dad a fry is not taking anything away from her mom. It is one plate of fries, one meal, and one parent who happened to be holding the camera.
