Parents comparing notes about how many years apart to have kids usually end up trading guesses — two years feels close, four feels spaced out, and nobody has hard numbers to point to. Child-development researchers do have numbers, and a large French birth-cohort study followed more than 12,000 two-year-olds to get them. It found that among toddlers with one older sibling, the ones with a bigger age gap actually scored lower on expressive vocabulary than those spaced more closely together — the opposite of what many parents might assume about giving a younger child more one-on-one time before a sibling arrives. It’s not the only large study to link sibling spacing to how fast a child starts talking, and the pattern shows up again in a separate cohort on the other side of Europe.

What the largest study actually measured
The research, published in the journal Developmental Science and built on France’s ELFE national birth cohort study, tracked 12,296 two-year-olds using the French adaptation of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory, a standard tool researchers use to measure toddler vocabulary. The study wasn’t designed around one narrow question about age gaps — it looked at sibling number, sibling sex, parental language background, and spacing all at once, which is part of why the age-gap finding stands out. Each additional older sibling was associated with roughly a 0.08 standard-deviation reduction in vocabulary score, consistent with what researchers call resource-dilution theory: more children in a household generally means less one-on-one language exposure per child from parents.
The age-gap piece went against what the researchers themselves expected. Among children with exactly one older sibling, larger gaps between the two kids correlated with lower vocabulary scores, not higher ones. The authors describe it as a counterintuitive result, since a wider gap is often assumed to mean the younger child gets more undivided parental attention before the second child comes along.

A second, separate cohort points the same direction
A more recent study published in the journal Child Development examined a different question with a different population and still landed on sibling spacing as a meaningful factor. Researchers tracked 6,163 Norwegian children between 8 and 36 months old and confirmed that birth order was negatively associated with vocabulary size overall, though the relationship followed a U-shaped pattern rather than a straight line. More notably, the researchers introduced what they called a “child-to-caregiver ratio” — a measure that counts an older sibling as an effective caregiver only once that sibling reaches a certain developmental maturity, which the data showed happens earlier for girls than for boys.
That detail matters for how spacing plays out in practice. The same age gap between two siblings can mean something different for language development depending on the older child’s sex and exactly how many months or years separate them, since it changes the point at which an older sibling shifts from being another mouth competing for parental attention to being an active contributor to the younger child’s language environment.
Why closer spacing may not be the disadvantage it looks like
Both studies push back on an assumption that shows up often in parenting research summaries: that more space between siblings automatically protects a younger child’s early development by preserving more exclusive parent time. The ELFE cohort data found the opposite pattern for vocabulary specifically. One explanation researchers point to is that closely spaced siblings may end up in overlapping developmental stages long enough to influence each other’s language directly — through play, imitation, and shared caregiving routines — in ways that a bigger gap doesn’t allow for.
Neither study claims spacing is destiny. The Norwegian research found that once you account for the child-to-caregiver ratio rather than raw birth order or age gap alone, that more precise measure predicts vocabulary outcomes better than age gap by itself — a reminder that spacing is one input in a larger household equation, not a standalone rule.
What this means for the numbers parents actually track
Neither of these cohort studies was designed to tell any individual family how many years to wait between children — that’s not what large observational studies do, and the effect sizes involved are modest, on the order of fractions of a standard deviation rather than dramatic gaps. What they add is something parenting guesswork doesn’t usually have: a measured, population-level signal, drawn from more than 18,000 children combined across two countries, that the number of years between siblings is statistically linked to how a younger child’s vocabulary develops in the first few years of life. The mechanism researchers keep circling back to isn’t the age gap itself so much as what it changes about the amount and kind of language a child hears — from parents, and increasingly, from the sibling closest to them in age.
