Walmart Recalls Nearly 4.5 Million Expert Grill Wire Brushes Because Loose Bristles Can Stick To Food, And You Do Not Need A Receipt To Get Your Money Back

It costs a few dollars, hangs near the grill all summer and gets used without a second thought. The wire grill brush is about as ordinary as a kitchen tool gets. Now one version of it is part of an enormous recall, and the number involved is hard to believe.

According to OpenClassActions’ report on the recall, Walmart is recalling about 4,477,655 Expert Grill wire grill brushes. The recall was dated Oct. 1, 2026 (No. 27-010).

What is wrong with the brush

The problem is the bristles. The report says loose metal bristles can stick to the grill grate or to the food and be swallowed. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says this can cause serious internal injuries that may require surgery. At the time of the announcement, no injuries had been reported.

That is the scary part of this sort of hazard. A tiny piece of wire is nearly impossible to see on a charred burger or a corn cob. You scrub the grate, set the food on top, and never know a bristle came loose. It is the kind of risk that is invisible until it is too late, which is why a recall of this size deserves attention.

Where it was sold and for how much

The brushes were sold at Walmart stores and on Walmart.com from January 2021 through August 2026. Prices ranged from $1 to $28. Do not assume yours is fine because it was cheap, or because it was pricey. Check the brand name on the handle. If it says Expert Grill, it is part of this recall.

How to get your money back

This is the good news. The remedy is a full refund or Walmart credit when you return the brush. You do not need a receipt. For something that cost a couple of dollars and may have been bought years ago, that is a real relief. Most of us do not keep a receipt for a grill brush.

Return the brush to Walmart and choose the refund or the credit.

Why a cheap brush gets a big recall

It is easy to shrug at a recall for something that costs a dollar or two. But the number tells the story. With about 4.5 million brushes sold, there are likely many kitchens, patios and campers with one tucked away. A low price makes people less likely to keep track of a product, and that is exactly why a notice like this needs to be spread around. A cheap item can still carry a serious risk, and the risk here is something swallowed, which is not a problem you can fix after the fact.

If you know someone who grills a lot, such as a brother-in-law, a neighbor or a friend from church, send them a quick message. Most people never read recall notices, and a text from a friend is often how the word gets out.

Do not toss it in a drawer

Resist the urge to set the brush aside and use it one more time, or to hand it to a neighbor who is hosting a cookout. A recalled brush is best kept out of use until you can return it. If you have family members who do the grilling, make sure they know about it, so nobody grabs it out of habit on the next warm weekend.

Think about the places a grill brush might be hiding. It could be in the garage, on a hook on the patio, in a camping bin or in the trunk of a car after a tailgate. It may even be in a vacation rental or a cabin you own. A quick walk around will do.

Grilling safely after a recall

The scare is a good moment to rethink the whole cleaning routine. Wire brushes are common, but they are not the only choice, and there are good reasons to look at the alternatives. A bristle-free scraper is one option, and many people also wipe the grate down with a cloth after heating it. Whatever you pick, a few habits help.

  • Look over the grate before you cook. If you see anything that looks like a stray wire, remove it.
  • Clean the grill when it is warm and not hot, and wipe the grate afterward.
  • Replace worn or shedding brushes, whatever the brand. If the bristles are falling out, the brush is done.
  • Look over your food before you serve it, especially anything that came off a freshly brushed grate.
  • If someone has stomach pain, trouble swallowing or other worrying symptoms after eating grilled food, get medical help rather than waiting.

It is worth saying that a recall like this is a sign the system is working. A problem was found, an announcement was made, and there is a simple remedy that does not even require a receipt.

The only part left is up to you. Take a look at your grill brush today. If it is an Expert Grill wire brush, return it and collect your refund or credit. It is the easiest few dollars you will get back all year, and your next cookout will be a lot safer for it.
