A video from the account Kylen Suttner opens with on-screen text that doubles as the whole premise: “Buying 12 TOYS for a 12 HR road trip (i’m a genius).” Filmed from the driver’s seat before a long haul with two toddlers, she walks through the plan: one new, cheap toy wrapped and handed over for each hour of the drive, timed to arrive right as boredom would otherwise set in. “I fear this idea was genius,” she says in the caption, adding “wish us luck on this 12 hour drive.” The clip pulled in 135,200 likes, 498 comments, 4,353 saves, and 607 shares.
@kylensuttner 12 toys for a 12 hour drive
A budget of twelve small, cheap toys for a long drive is a reasonable plan logistically, but road-trip safety guidance adds a layer worth knowing before filling that bag: not every toy that’s fine on a living room floor is fine in a moving car seat. Guidance on car seat toys is specific that anything handed to a child while buckled in should be soft-sided and free of small, detachable pieces that pose a choking risk, precisely because a toddler strapped into a five-point harness can’t be monitored and assisted as closely as one playing on the floor nearby.
The crash-safety angle is the one parents are less likely to think of on their own: a hard or heavy toy that’s perfectly safe to play with sitting still becomes a projectile in even a moderate collision or hard stop. Guidance on this point recommends avoiding hard-sided water bottles, tablet holders that mount over the headrest, and similarly rigid objects near a car seat for exactly this reason, a loose hard object traveling at highway speed doesn’t stay where it was placed. Soft-sided options like fabric books, silicone containers, and squeezable toys avoid that risk entirely while still giving a toddler something new to unwrap and explore.
None of this means the hourly-unwrapping structure itself needs to change, it’s a genuinely effective way to pace novelty across a long drive, since a toddler who’s bored at hour three is a very different problem than a toddler handed all twelve toys at once in the driveway. The adjustment is mostly in the shopping cart: a dollar-store haul built around soft, lightweight, choke-safe options checks every box this hack is going for without introducing a hazard that only shows up if the unexpected happens on the highway.
